"Line up and Wait" today

I heard it today and it was also on the ATIS: "Notice to Airmen, line up and wait phraseology is in effect."

I was doing a very early flight this morning and we were one of the first ones to land in SLC. The sun wasn’t even up. As we were rolling off the high speed on 16L we hear tower transmit in a somewhat excited voice say, “Hey Amflight 123 you are the very first one to get this! Line up and wait runway 16L.” There was a longer than normal pause followed by a slightly puzzled response. “Uhhhh tower do you mean position and hold 16L for Amflight 123?” Apparently he didn’t get the memo. :) I’m sure towers across the country had to explain that one more than a few times today.

And? You were doing that weren't' you?

What was he supposed to say? "Traffic has lined up and is waiting"?

I'm sorry if everyone's perfect little world has been turned upside down with this drastic change in phraseology.

Get over it.

I don't recall ever saying anything about being turned upside down. It just seems weird that the FAA would bother changing one line of phraseology but not the other.

How in the world did he not hear about this? I haven't heard the end of it since it was released months ago! I have gotten no less than 10 emails in the last week ALONE about it.

Our descent phraseology changed two years ago from

"Pilots Discretion"
To
"When Ready"

Pilots still say PD in response...

Got it a couple times in DEN today. Funny, we were taxiing in and some old salty sounding guy piped up on tower freq and said "what's the FAA gonna do next, make us watch soccer instead of american football?" Nobody responded but I chuckled a little.

Seems like the perfect time for an ATC clip I can't find. Has anyone else heard that JFK clip between Tower and Air France(IIRC) that went something like this:

Tower: AF123 position and hold 31L
AF123: Line up and wait 31L, AF123
Tower: AF123 position and hold 31L
AF123: Ok, line up and wait 31L, AF123
Tower: No...position and hold 31L
AF123: Line up and wait 31L!
Tower: AF123, no. Position and Hold 31L.

Pretty much expected to hear a Bald Ealge screech on the frequency.

Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this?

In my AF career, the military has changed big terminology like this numerous times. It's a little awkward the first couple flights, but soon it works just as well as the previous term did.

I flew yesterday, and got a "LUAW" call...and I responded appropriately. No big deal.

It's because they have nothing better to do than complain about it on the internet. And wow to the guy jumping on the other guy about a petty statement. Get a life.

I got the LUAW today, but then tower also told another plane "traffic holding in position."

I heard a "traffic will be waiting in position" yesterday with a little chuckle from the tower. Caught me off guard the first time I heard LUAW yesterday, I had forgotten all about it.

It's the internet... people complain about things, other people complain about people who complain about things, and another elite group complains about the people who complain about the complainers. ;)

I'm lined up and waiting for your mother.

Thanks DAN. My life is pretty incredible already, but I'll be sure to search for another one when I'm on the road sometime. Lives are pretty hard to come by locally, so i may have to import one.

And you'll probably be totally un-American and import one from China or Mexico or one of those other Asian countries...

;)
