Fly into KRAP all the time. I don't think it was faulty! At least the normal wind, the gust might be faulty but it is windier than heck there.

I was told not to trust reports that have the $ at the end.

I couldn't believe it either, and people still haven't really noticed.

Typically, the $ means the machine requires service, but for the most part, weather given by the machine is at least consistant. Remember, if a sensor is missing any two data reports in a 10 minute window that sensor data will be removed from the broadcast.

the 3 cup needs to be stowed, or removed in sustained winds over 35kts, the bearings in it are not rated for continuous operation in those speeds. It well could be that the winds have dammaged the system. NOAA is working on, and may soon deploy a sonic anemometer, similar to the ones used for windshear detection. They were also testing it for airborn ice detection, as well as a visual green laser vertical profiling system.

on the mountain, we had to remove the standard Anemometers, for the winter, and most of the summer time. Athe ASOS machine there really didn't last, and during peak winter weather - it went unpowered as the kero. generators couldn't supply enough power and heat for the rest of the systems.
