Lesson plan formats

I'm starting to work on building lesson plans in prep for my CFI initial. I'm wondering if anybody has come up with some formatting/layout options that have worked well for them.

I'm experimenting with using an 8.5x11 bi-fold format which would be quick to print and fold for each lesson. The layout might be something like front panel with an overview briefing and student info; middle two panels containing a teaching outline, related accident reports, common errors; and back panel formatted for in-flight instructor notes.

Wondering if anybody has come up with something similar that I could use to develop my ideas with? Or if you have any alternative lesson plan formats which have worked well for you. My hope is that the effort is more useful than just building a study binder for the CFI initial exam, but would be material I'd be compelled to actually use.

I've put this in a lot of threads... a link to the lessons plans and such that I used from '02-'06 - but for some strange reason when I try to search for the threads, it comes up nil... so here you go, my whole 'book of tricks' in PDF format:

The only thing I ask... if you use the Intro to Comm article, give me credit because it is one of the best things I have written.

Thank you for the thread man. I am having trouble building mine without it looking like a watered down PHAK chapter and appreciate the insight ClearedFTO and /G. Any other examples floating around or good places to look through?

Just did my CFI initial and failed. It was nothing like I was told it was going to be, and I WAY OVER PREPARED.

What was it like? I've always been told its a four hour conversation about physiology....

but that's just what I've heard from a few others that have taken it at my school.

Based on the people I've talked to, the CFI Initial is one of the most non-standardized exams out there... all depends on who you get as an examiner.

Sorry to hear that, but it's not very unusual so dont beat yourself up. Write it up for us if you would, good learning experience for all of us.

Umm, Spent way too much time preparing for the FOI oral, Preparing too teach; Ispent so many man hours on my lesson plans, and In then end he didnt even want to see them. He wanted me to teach a lot of items, off the top of my head, I took a lot of time to know where to find the regs,( I was always told they want to know that you know where things are), He wanted me to have the regs memorized. It was just a completly differnt experience than I though. We spent 15 minutes on the FOI, and I was prepared for atleast an hour. We jumped around a lot. Over all It was a great learning experience, and I am not upset at all. I knew going in, that it would be difficult. When I say I was over prepared, I spent too much time on the big items, and neglected the small stuff. Thats what got me. The stuff I missed, i would have still missed if my checkride was at a later date, because it was completly out of thought. Thats all. I cant wait to go back and kick its ass though. I had a lot of anxiety leading up to this test, but now that I know the FSDO is not this horrid place, I wilkl def. be more at ease.

Don't worry about it! I failed mine a few times, each time it was my fault and I was way too nervous about screwing up. If you are going back to the same examiner, see if you can find anyone else who has gone on a ride with them. Also be prepared to take a completely different oral, covering things that were not covered on your first go around along with coverage of what you missed.

thanks for the advice. I built this checkride into something so BIG, and if I had approached it like I have approached every other checkride, I would have been fine. I feel like an idiot, but like I said, I am not upset. I would have been insulted, if I did pass. haha. O well. Birthday is in two weeks, I will kill both.
