Lesson for all those considering joining

...and I thought the pissing contest was over at the top of this page. The original point is for all of those preparing to join, be VERY careful and particular in your conversations with the recruiter. Serving time in the military is fine. Serving time in the pen with 'Bubba... not so good.

With all due respect, young padawan, I think we checked you out a long time ago. Probably when you let everyone know that you got the 'ole DQ at MEPS. As the title suggests - "Lesson for all those considering joining," I think the subject evolved a bit. Probably because the title casts a very wide net and is not confined to - "My joining experience gone wrong, recruiter is a jerk." And, that is exactly the case with almost every thread on this board. Glad you came along for the ride, as I am sure that you gained prospective from watching all of this unfold. Advance yourself 5 to 10 years (if you would have went in), and I am sure that you would have plenty to say.

As far as pissing contests.....I think that is a complete wrong identification of the discussion between surreal and myself. That was no where near a pissing contest. A pissing contest breaks out when testosterone, egos, and emotions get involved in having a disagreement. I don't have an ego, I think I depleted all of my testosterone chasing skirts over in Europe (and trust me, I did some major damage back in the day), and it takes a whooooolee lot to get my emotions involved in almost any discussion....especially on a message board.

Good luck in whatever route you decide to take, fellow. And, keep us posted!

I hate to say it, but the majority of our problems here in Afghanistan and Iraq come from the media.

Trust me, I am IN Afghanistan, and have been here for nearly 2 years. I am not on some huge FOB milling around all day. We fly missions every day almost. I've logged about 30 combat hours flying since Monday alone. I believe this qualifies me as actually seeing whats happening.

Things are not nearly as bad as they seem when I turn on CNN or MSNBC or whatever. Let me repeat that... Things are not nearly as bad as they seem when I turn on CNN or MSNBC or whatever.

Iran is causing us problems in both areas, and in particular here in Afghanistan, the Dutch, French and some times Germans are causing us problems by not being agressive enough. The US, Brit, and Canadian troops are doing a bang up job.

Just my 2 cents.

Got a lot of respect for you, but I am not trying to turn this back to my case. This is a discussion forum, so I guess tangents should be expected.

But, the conversation did get a little touchy there for a second.

Regardless of what your recruiter tells you, your Drill Sgt will straighten all that out for you in the first 17 seconds!:crazy:

I'll never forget the first time a fellow recruit advised our Senior Drill that his recruiter said he wouldn't have to "__(insert stupid idea here)__". I think our entire company was awake for 3 days after that in front leaning rest position.

Good times!

I really don't disagree with the general point of view you have...I just think the way you are arguing it is based on some false logic.

Fair enough, and certainly understandable.

My issue arises when we have been transitioned to a force to set up democracy in the world - when we are having one heck of a troublesome time protecting our own democracy. This notion that we can continue to act as an empire simply because we are, presently, the world's lone super power is absurd. Along with the fact that we are burning down the village in order to save it - The Patriot Act, Military Commission Act of 2006 (removal of Habeas Corpus), un-authorized wire taping of American citizens, the list goes on. All for what? To protect America? This is not America anymore, not when we are having our own freedoms and liberties taken from us by our own leaders. It is exactly what our enemy (any terror organization) wants, a ruined Western civilization.

It is also the notion that our political leaders must speak to us as if we are special children that ride the short bus. I can not speak for middle America, but the urban, and suburban environments on the east and west coasts are smarter than what the Bush administration thinks.

In the end, a renegade eventually dies due to their own miscalculation of their own skills. I hope we haven't over played our hand, unfortunately I think it's well beyond that.

HAHAHAHA, I caught you! Happy belated Memorial Day, brother. And to all the other brothers and sisters out there that served with honor!

Thanks, no matter what my comments are in regards to world relations here on JC, my time spent in the Air Force was a great experience . . . I'm a rather humble person about my professional work, so I really don't brag or boast about my achievements, except maybe just this one time.

This past February I was honored by Air Combat Command and was selected as their #1 Outstanding Weather Airmen of the Year for CY 2006.

I'm glad my hard work and dedication to the job netted me such an award, one that'll stay with me for many years to come.

So - like I said, I won't have to worry about looking back and seeing I had a good time, I know I did.

As for the VONAPP stuff, I called the regional VA office in Atlanta a few days ago and they just needed verification that I was seperating since the ESO (Education Service Officer's) signature would not be on my form. So, I mailed them a copy of my orders as well.

I knew this is how you really felt inside about everything!

LOL - Still yet, where did I say I learned any certain lesson?

It's life, not a lesson to be learned.

You do your job well, better than your peers, and you may be recognized for it.

No whether it was a ploy by my leaders to try to get me to re-enlist, I don't know. The squadron, and group level awards - maybe. But from a MAJCOM. . .doubt it.
