Learjet 60 crash in West Palm Beach

That's the only thing that makes sense with how fast that developed. Thunderstorm pushing wet warm air up, they exit the tops and immediately ice up and stall.

Yeeesh that was tough to listen to. Wouldn't recommend it.

SLD at the top is terrifying. There’s not an ice protection system in use that will keep a plane safe in that.

Trying to look at Lear 60 flight deck photos and I’m seeing everything from old ass steam gauges to the latest state of the art glass stuff, and things in between (combo). I wonder what kinda radar this thing had.

Saw this from a weather account so take it for what it’s worth.

I’ll tell you something I’ve seen in corporate aviation, reliance on nexrad as a method of picking though storms. I don’t understand it. That information is 20 mins old before it gets to the airplane.

Case in point the MEL on airplane I flew today says you can dispatch without an onboard radar as long as the data weather is operable. It’s great for a planning tool. It’s terrible to navigate with IMC.

We had a guy at my 135 shop do that with a King Air 90. They ended up getting hit by lighting and absolutely rocked.

The pax were terrified, and the FO refused to ever fly with him after that.

I distinctly remember telling him just a few weeks before that about how old the NEXRAD images can be. Total moron.

This was almost 20 years ago, but I’m sure it still happens.

Nexrad is for strategic decision making

Onboard Radar is for tactical decision making

That’s crazy- Inop wx radar for us is Day VMC with no forecast convective activity only - 3 flights. Can’t imagine anybody being ok without it

I can probably count on one hand, certainly on 2, the number of times I turned on the wx radar on the Lear. Not much need for it in the strip of coastline between PDX and ANC

Don’t read any comments on any non-professional aviator sites (flightradar24, et.al), all kinds of conspiracy theories about Mara Lago, DEI because it’s a female on the radio, etc. It’s disgusting.

I wasn't going to listen to the audio, then the news starts playing it before I can turn it off. Fortunately, they didn't play past the "descending 10000fpm".
Feel so bad for these people.

Wasn't it a Lear 55 that did the exact same thing at PNE last year?

The plane at PNE had just taken off. The plane that crashed today was at altitude and fell 5 miles in a minute, per the news. The pilots radioed that there was icing right before the crash.

Haven’t listened to the audio but allegedly a wx deviation was denied. I’m sure the armchair NTSB has it solved already but all I’ll say is I flew through a top once that I’d partially overscanned after being denied deviations around the cell and descended early into it and…I’m a lot less patient with controllers after that.

They turned into the cell so idk how a deviation was denied. Wasn’t on the audio either. The path looks all like if they stayed on their course/heading they would have avoided the small cell they hit.

A more analytical look.
