LONG BEACH, Calif. - A plane crash at Long Beach airport killed five people and injured a sixth on Wednesday, authorities said.

Airport director Mario Rodriguez said the six people were aboard the Beechcraft King Air craft. Five people were pronounced dead at the scene, and one man was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries, he said.

The plane crashed and burned during a takeoff at about 10:30 a.m., Long Beach fire spokesman Steve Yamamoto said.

Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was departing for Salt Lake City when it went down.

The front half of the plane and its wings came to rest on a grass median between two runaways. The plane left a scorched trail dozens of feet long as it apparently plowed through the grass.

I heard from someone at the airport that there MAY have been an engine fire on takeoff. The airplane went WAY off the runway it departed, so it will be interesting to see what the final report says.

I heard it was 2 adults and 4 kids (unconfirmed)... a real bummer. May they all RIP.

Crazy thing is, I had just spoken to one of the guys on board on Monday regarding a King Air gig..

My office overlooks the field, and I'm glad I was not there today to see this tragedy. Apparently there is a video of the accident. My sis knows the sole survivor. So sad, just awful. RIP. Be safe out there everyone.

HOLY CRAP! There is nothing left. Scary.

Anyone know the tailnumber? A guy I know just delivered a KA200 to Socal about 2 weeks ago.

RIP to those lost.

We've all seen how fragile life is lately, with a few fatal crashes across the US and the loss of one our members...this just rips that wound back open. The scariest thing I can imagine in an airplane is a fire and those pictures are downright scary.

RIP to those lost today :(
