KDMA an uncontrolled field.

TEB almost had to evacuate the tower a couple weeks ago due to smoke. Fortunately it just turned out to be a short and they didn't, but it would have gotten mighty interesting.

Curiously, now that TUS just 6 months ago finally replaced their 55+ year old tower with the new one, which CONUS FAA tower facility now holds the title of "oldest"?

I believe it's Stinson Municpal in San Antonio, but a new tower there should be completed in 2018.

The Air Force has mobile control towers. Pretty standard item. I'd bet there is one at KDMA by now.

sweet, when can I get one of these on the gray market??

Lots of old towers were abandoned and never restaffed after the PATCO strike in 1981. They sat vacant for decades.

That being the case, I'm glad they don't work near the traffic we did back when I was there. 'Cause back then, we had to WALK up the stairs to get to the top and then, at the end of our shift, we had to walk UP to get to our cars. That's right, young 'uns, we had to walk UP both ways, no shoes either! Back THEN, air traffic control was tough; not like the pansy stuff of today!!
FIFY.............:)

And none of that ARTS crap. TPX-42 separated the men from the boys.

TPX-42 ? ! ? ! ? ! Real men use raw radar and read beacon codes from the number/positioning of the slashes behind the target.

How's that for old school?

Were you in the Army or Navy? Cause the Air Force left that old crap in Vietnam.

That was a joke. I was Air Force, so I never worked raw, but I was trained on how to read the beacon control slashes and an still do so today.

Yea, I did that too. But never saw it in use until I visited an Army facility, Fort Still OK.
