Just Found...................

I just found out that you can buy plans and kit build a full scale spitfire - the estimated cost is $200K and about 5000 hours of sweat labor.

The look great at the end:

Not gonna come close to finishing that airplane for 200k. I bet that's the kit cost.

And you can build full scale P-51's and FW190's too.

How much does a real P-51 or Spitfire or something cost? A few mil? Not that I'm in a position to buy one or anything....

They do not sell a kit - that is what they say for building it. Considering it is a tube and wood construction I can not see why it would be hugely expensive - the thunder mustang full built was $300 which is a racing 75% version of the mustang.

A restored P-51 is over a million.

I would love to see that completed with an overhauled Merlin or Allison on the front for 200k...

The aircraft you posted is a kit, not sure where you found that picture or information from. This is a spitfireaircraftco.com kit. The kit retails for 332,000. This is before engine and avionics, and of course the price of finishing.

I haven't seen a Thunder Mustang sold for under $500k (that was completed). Thunder Mustang was a great concept. Some guys in Lawrence, KS made a run at taking that design over with assistance from the Thunder Builders Group. They eventually had to drop their bid, but I went to their hanger and they were building one. Really nice guys. I believe the kit was around $250k (in 2002 when I saw these guys).

Inverted - I am not sure if I am misinterpretting your tone but regardless in your last posts you are wrong. The aircraft I posted in the picture is built from Marcel Jurca plans the MJ-100 to be exact, which there is no kit for. It is a very different aircraft than The Spitfire Companies kit. Firstly, the later is a wood fuselage, while the former is tube and metal contruction. Secondly Marcel has a few flying models, while I know of none from The Spitfire Company. I recieved my number of $200,00 from a gentleman building one on a homebuilt forum - his exact comments were 'I think if you were good at bargain hunting you could do it for about $200,000'.

The Thunder Mustang and these replicas are not comparable - the Thunder Mustang is made from carbon fiber and was supported by a company. Very different from a company who only sells the plans and an aircraft made from less expensive material. The $300,000 number I through out earlier was before the company went under the cost of the complete kit was $275,000 - once you add paint, interior, additional avioncis you could easily spend $15,000. When I referred to it as fully built, I didn't mean one that was bought finished but rather the money invested when you built your own.

That's kinda cool. Someday, when I'm an idle rich dude, I too can have my own replica WWII fighter.

That way, when I build an F-4U and put a PT-6 in the front of it, nobody can claim I sullied an original. ;)

Seriously though- somebody call me when they start turning out F-8 Crusader kits. That'd be the shizzle.

But.... you did

;)

Also, you're going to need something bigger than a PT-6

What is your fascination with a Corsair with a PT6? You would take one of the most beautiful killing machines of all time and ruin the looks with a Turbine? You would take one of the great sounds of all time and replace it with a Turbine? This isn't the first time that you've mentioned this...you've done it a lot. I'm going to have to intervene or something. That Laughner guy was acting all whacko too but nobody really intervened. Your incessant bleeting to put a PT6 on a Corsair clearly shows that you are not sane and are deeply troubled. I'll be notifying the authorities, your airline, and Chuck Norris. Good Day sir!

Of all the things I've ever gotten into trouble for, this would likely be the most laughable. This would even top the time I jettisoned an Army medical CPR dummy from a helicopter at altitude to make a gag video.

(Disclaimer: No people were harmed in the making of this video. The dummy, however, was obliterated. The U.S. taxpayers were duly compensated. I think a few people driving down the nearby road may have soiled their pants.)

I remember hearing pretty recently that they were going to start manufacturing the kits again.

I would love an A-4 (my old man turned wrenches on those)

The A-4 is really a timeless airframe. It's just solid as hell and not over-designed all over the place. Probably made maintaining them easier than some of their contemporaries. Probably would make owning one easy relatively easier, too. If we got a pair of them, we could boondoggle somebody into shooting us off a boat somewhere. :D

That's one thing I've always wanted to do.. just once. Full buster on a hot cat and whooooooosh! That's rock steady, brother.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Firebird that was awesome....

Gracias. I wish I could say I wrote that. I was almost not in it- I spent the earlier part of the day checking the tension on tail rotor cables. They literally had to pull me out of the innards of a 'Hawk to get me to participate.

Then I found out I was typecast so I ran with it. :D
