Jumpseating to Hawaii

Ajax

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My family is going to Hawaii next month for a few days, I won't know my schedule until the end of February so this is more of a hypothetical issue. Aside from the obvious flight load issue, does anyone have any experience jumpseating to Hawaii, be it riding shotgun or via FedEx/UPS? Any protips, and is it worth my time if I can get a few days off?

I took the jumpseat on FX to HNL last year. I had no issues with it other than prep for a taxicab ride if you need to get to the terminal. Getting out of HNL, I had the jumpseat on the 330 to ATL.

LAX is a good option to leave from. Lots of flights. You'll get on eventually but it may take a few tries. Keep in mind that the Hawaiian 330s and any United 777s have two jumpseats. Most everybody else (except for some of the random 767s) only have 1. Other options include going to one of the neighbor islands first and then coming in to HNL (assuming that's where you are going). Maui and Kauai have service about every 30 minutes for most of the day (last flights out are about 1045pm) and Kona and Hilo have hourly or less service (last flights out are around 9pm most days).

FedEx is also an option. I think they do Memphis and Oakland to Honolulu.

UPS has three flights a day to the islands during the week and one a day on weekends. All out of ONT with very good availability. The MD11 leaves at 845pm to HNL, 767 to Kona at 11pm, and 747 to HNL at 3am. The 747 is the best ride with bunks. MD11 has bunks but the crew has to open them. 767 has no bunks and 4 jumpseats. MD11 has five jumpseats and 747 has five or six. You most likely won't get catered out of ONT so bring your own food. It's a short $14 cab ride to ONT ops from the terminal. Coming back it's an MD11 at 11am HNL to ONT and the 767 at 8am comes back HNL to LAX, SAN, LGB, or ONT, depending on the day. HNL ops is a goat rope so give yourself some extra time. Probably easiest to meet the crew 2 hours prior at the Ala Moana and ride with them to the airport.

I'm just adding...

If you choose to jumpseat with Hawaiian, the minimum time to list for the jumpseat (or nonrev in general) for an overseas flight is 45 min prior. For an interisland flight, it is 30 min prior. If you are at a US Mainland station, list at the front counter. If you are leaving HNL (transpac or interisland), list at the service desk either inside or outside of security. Just be advised sometimes agents will run out of jumpseat forms at the service desk located inside security. In this case, they will make you go out of security to the front service desk to list there.

Also, I've brought this issue up before, but I just want to throw it out there again: attempting to jumpseat in shorts and and a t-shirt - just don't do it. You'd be surprised to hear how many that actually do. It should go without saying, but lots of off-line guys jumpseating on HA are apparently on vacation-mode.

It is true Hawaiian is a laid-back company and great crews, but we have some captains that are still very old school and will not hesitate to deny someone for inappropriate attire. Business casual or uniform works great (no jeans or cargo pants).

Have fun!

If denying somebody for requesting the jumpseat while dressed like a slob is old school... I guess I don't want to be new school.

I used to commute between Seattle and Honolulu and never missed a flight. Hawaiian was the best out of all the carriers I rode with.

Take anybody who has two jumpseats. I take Hawaiian because although they are usually full, still give you those.

I forgot to add I'm a cheapskate and the bus to town is cheap and works well. If you want to spend a little more the van services can get you there for $ 10 more and in a bit more comfort.

First step is to secure the days off, junior reserve FO...

Just don't want to get the days and not have an idea how to get there

Might want to check with FedEx jumpseat with flights to Hawaii. When I left Hawaii was considered an international destination (along with Puerto Rico) and they did not allow anyone else to jumpseat on those flights besides FedEx pilots (not even dispatchers or mechanics). Flights out of MEM, OAK, and occasionally flights out of LAX.

My high school history coming back but didn't Hawaii stop being an international destination in 1959?

I know one college that still didn't get the memo in 1983... 8)

Careful using HAL out of HNL. I've been left twice because the agent didn't want to run me through CASS (I was there 45 minutes prior to push).

No. Leave it up to airline management to rewrite history. Where I work Alaska and Hawaii are international and Canada and Mexico domestic....

I didn't make the rules, I was just told them! I know ANC is considered domestic, but anything put in "international category" pilots are the only people jumpseating unless they've got to get someone out there.
