Jumpseating on FAM flights

The jump seat makes you a crew member. When sitting up front or in a pax seat ALWAYS introduce yourself to the Captian as he has ultimate authority of who rides JS. It's rare as dx but also be prepared to show your license if requested.

In my years of JS there have only been a couple of times where circumstances have prevented a pre flight intro. If that happens say hello and thank you to the pilots while deplaning. Even if you don't see the captain while boarding check in with the FO.

Also, have whoever is dispatching those flights list you as a must ride jumpseat ;)

You still have to ask the captain but it solves almost any issue that may arise from the gate agent to wanting to put you up there to if there are multiple people trying to commute.

Thanks! Are the jumpseats typically the same seats that the flight attendants sit in for take off and landing? (except in the cockpit obviously!)

E175 XFA jumpseats aren't bad. For comparison, I'm 5'10" 250 and can sit comfortably in them with room to spare with the harnesses

Well hopefully it won't be an issue soon as I'm trying to lose the extra weight and (more importantly, to me at least) the inches around the waist.

I never heard about asking the CA, either in school or @ my airline. I told one of the DX supervisors I needed to do my fam ride, and they took it from there. After things were set up, they simply told me when and where to show up, and to politely introduce myself to the crew & gate agent. I WAS listed on the release, of course. When the big day came, I politely introduced myself; said that I was supposed to do my fam ride (in case an FAA guy showed up and bumped me); showed my ID; then I got out of the flight crew's way as they got ready. Of course, when the one CA asked me to watch his things while he went to get coffee, I cheerfully said I would. Then, I got out of their way, so they could get the plane ready. While waiting, I sat in 'first class' on our CRJ7s and waited for the flight crew to tell me it was ok to come in and take a seat. Neither CA or FO requested my license; presentation of my ID was sufficient. That said, I'd have had NO PROBLEM showing my license had they asked.

Oh, and you know what was the best part? Hearing the company gossip! I heard about management on the outbound leg, while I got an EARFUL about one of my colleagues on the way back. Oh, how I'd LOVE to share more details, but that would be unwise. All in all, I had a good time with the guys! Now, if only there were more LEGROOM in a CRJ7's cockpit...

Hearing/providing some company gossip with flight crews while jumpseating is fine (and fairly inevitable), but I'd be careful about sharing it on a publicly accessible message board...even if no names are mentioned (especially since you've already said which airline you work for elsewhere on this board.) Also, I agree with you completely about the legroom in a CRJ.

Yeah, I had to unbuckle and stand a couple of times. You have the door, the sea, and the center console is right there; there's nowhere to put your feet...

You checked in with the crew so you did things right. Note that showing your license usually won't happen but there is nothing preventing a crew from asking.

As far as company Intel and dirt, those are fringe benefits of riding JS on company metal.

The sups told me to check in with the GA and the crew, which I did. And yes, the company intel were GREAT to hear-best part of the whole day!

Don't get too excited about gossip. This industry has ears.

As for JS, my favorite ride BY FAR was a Momma Bear A330 with a 64.5 year old cap. Also was one of the few rides I introduced myself, had all paperwork handy, and was told "Any young buck with fire in his eyes is welcome aboard my boat, so long as he's behaved," which was uhh. Interesting.

Of the weekly trips on compsany metal or othAAr methods getting around the country, I've shown papers/IDs maybe twice monthly, been told "Oh okay" the other twice, and was interrupted/welcomed without question maybe 2 or 3 other occasions. Always look and act like you're meeting the parents. Put elegantly, don't assume, and don't be a ----. No means no. Thank you sir, I wanted to check with you sir, I'll take the next one, have a great trip folks.

OH one other thing -
If you DON'T KNOW HOW TO QUICK-DON, ASK.

Dispatchers dont have medicals. I actually had to show a passport once on a DL flight and not just to the gate agents. The best ride in my opinion was a A319. The middlish seat has more room then directly behind the captain. If im not mistaken the 757 your behind the captain and elevated. Cant see anything out the window on landing but very roomie. At least you get a foot rest ha!

The 757 trick is to rip the back rest off, then move sideways. Win-win for both you and the captain for leg room.
