Jumpseat question...

My question is about first being able to get a jumpseat. If I am a CFI traveling to my new job would it be theoretically possible to get a jumpseat or do you have to work for a company that has agreements in place? I think I pretty much know the answer I just thought I would ask.

Next is a question I have had since reading several of the Etiquette questions and posts on flights as Rev and Non-Rev passengers. I completely understand the reasoning in intrducing yourself if you are a passenger on an airline if you are an airline or "netjets" type pilot. You intro yourself to the Capt and then take your seat. What would you guys say to a CFI doing this. When I board an aircraft as a Revenue pax, should I stick my head in the pit and give a quick hello? I plan to get a job in whatever presents itself in the future. That may be airlines and that may be part 135 or part 91 corporate.

So, what do you guys say?

Re: Moderator....

Jumpseating requires a jumpseat "agreement" between your current employer and the operator you're trying to jumpseat on.

I figured there would have to be an agreement in place.

What about introducing myself? Would I get laughed at, a "welcome aboard", or a "sit down, shuddup, enjoy the ride" response?

The NetJets guys never introduce themselves when they are riding.

We will sometimes if we're deadheading or nonrevving, but not necessarily. If you want to go take a peak up front (esp if youre riding on your new company that you're starting class for), it's typically more than welcome unless the CA is a loser.

Most guys welcome the company!

I've never tried to peek into the cockpit while boarding as a pax... I'll try to say hello to a couple pilots that are waiting to jumpseat though before boarding.

That's because they are paying.

No, as a CFI you are not eligible to ride the jumpseat. As for the specifics and protocal, I think that's best kept off a public forum. JMO.

I know what you are saying, but don't play the "Hi I'm a guy with a CFI, if you guys need any help I'll be in the back."

I remember some guy that came up to us once and said he was a Private and if we needed help he'd be in the back. The CA turned around and said: "Son, if you can start it up, its yours!" ... lol :D

You are a paying passenger, not a crew member 'hitching' a ride! There is nothing wrong with popping in your head before/after the flight and chat with the flight crews and ask them about the company/plane/how they got into flying, etc., but you don't have to show them your CFI certificate;)

As was said NetJets isn't in CASS and doesn't have agreements with many airlines so those guys you see are riding on a company paid ticket.

As far as the OP... if your company has a deal with a certain airline you can jumpseat in a cabin seat in the back. The only way you'd be able to ride up front is with a CASS verification which is something you probably don't have being a CFI at a flight school.

But.....but......I'm a PILOT! I NEED a window seat!

(Anyone remember that gem? ;))

Window Seat Girl.

She will live in infamy in JC folklore...

You know how some things people forget, that is not one of them.

So I read the thread from three years ago. WOW!!! I think if I had that much of a problem I would tell the ticket agent I was inhinged and NEEDED a window seat to keep my nerves cool. Of course then I would probably get carted off...but she seemed a little.....i'm not sure how to put it.

I am definitely not that full of myself, I was just thinking of being friendly, asking about the company, equipment, etc. Just like CRJDriver said, but I don't think I would say "if you need any help...".

Thanks for the responses though! :rawk:
