Jetstar 2 ?

Just makes em more badass. One of the funniest things (amongst many funny things) about Dr. Strangelove is, from the guys I've talked to, how close-to-the-point-of-being-not-at-all-directly-comical they got the sort of uh gestalt of SAC. Yes, it's an exaggeration, obviously. But probably a lot less so than most of us think...

Which is sweet.

Most of them knew it was a "one way trip"

Ask any former SAC KC-135 pilot about "standpipe fuel". Load the bombers with every last drop of fuel to the "standpipes" for the Big Mission and hopefully make your closest diversion field. Which many would say "Yeah, we'd probably be deadsticking it into the ocean" for the most part.

Thats why tanker guys were called TOADs back in the day. Tanker TOAD. Lots of people thought it was something disrespectful or a put down, but it wasn't; it was simply a truthful description of their mission in refueling the bombers after both launched. Take Off And Die was essentially what they did, once they passed nearly all their fuel to the outbound bombers, and pretty much had nowhere to go. And that in and of itself took cajones, knowing what you were doing and what your likely fate was going to be after you did your job.

When I got hired at Southernjets, I learned to speak SAC, NATOPS, FLS, SEAR(*) and, ATC and USAFA (unfortunately)

(*) Boots, boots boots...

Doesnt anyone remember the 1993 Stallone/Rooker movie Cliffhanger, which featured a JetStar? (good way to get rid of the copilot :))

Or the 1997 Travolta/Cage movie Face Off, filmed at the old George AFB
