Being rehabilitated means you get to rejoin society but that doesn't come without certain restrictions. Parole officers, drug testing, not getting version jobs based on past convictions.

That's just the way it works. Well, used to work.

A teacher that was convicted of child rape would have their teaching license pulled for life. And they wouldn't be allowed to be around children while on parole/probation.

Right as well as a pilot who used an airplane in the comission of a crime would likely lose all their certs… which makes sense. Airplanes had nothing to do with the crime so… you know, why should they be restricted when he gets out?

So man upfront. I gotta say I love you man. But I gotta go against the grain here as far as your thinking. If you have a felony especially for violence or sex abuse related charges. IMO you should not be flying a 121 aircraft after you're released from jail. Ever!

Right, and you’re entitled to that opinion, but I just don’t believe in punishing people indefinitely. If he isn’t rehabilitated then he shouldn’t be out of prisión… if the system is broken… well then we absolutely need to fix it - but once you’re done and you’ve paid your debt to society you should be able to do what you want and have all the rights of every other citizen.

i don’t know, I just don’t understand why his career is actually important when he gets out of prison?

I don't think the point of prison is rehabilitation. I think its more or less serving out your time. Attending groups, talking to the psychologist is optional. But doing things like that can be used to show taking steps toward rehabilitation for early parole.

I know at ASH (Arizona State Hospital) the sex offender wing I used to work on, is for violent sexual offenders who served their time, but were still deemed too dangerous to be put back in society. So when they were released from prison, they were bused over to ASH to serve out an amended sentence.
 
I've said in the past that being convicted for any violent or sexual felony needs to be harsh and the punishment should serve as an example for people of what happens if you do cross that line. If you think showing the public examples of righteous men who served their time and are now successful is going to deter any future crime I think you're delusionaL. All you've done is glorify another thug and plenty of folks will assume that's a proper life path. People who commit these crimes deserve the punishment they get even if it extends beyond their incarceration.

No. If you want to solve the issue you have to start long before a person commits a felony. Let's talk about common factors regarding incarcerated people, I'll suggest one and you can respond, lack of a father in the home growing up.

Totally agree (though I’d say broken homes in general whether it’s a mother or a father are bad for society and probably correlate strongly with incarceration), so let’s fix that in our culture.

Still, once they’re out, what are we going to do with them? And are they getting rehabilitated or are they just biding their time in purgatory to wait to age out of crime?

Literally everyone agrees things aren’t working, so what are we going to do about this. I don’t think punishing people in perpetuity is going to be a valid solution to society’s woes.
