I have seen some incredible waves like that in Maui, Waimea, Pipeline and other spots in Hawaii. From the shore only. My theory is that when you have to be towed out to waves that are that far from shore and generally those waves are some of the largest generated on the planet, that is waves that are 20 to 60 plus feet high, that my little ass is fine on the shore watching. The currents can be so dangerous and you can have your butt slammed right into the sea bottom or a reef, you can be hit by more than one wave, drown, break your neck or back, have no chance to swim to the surface...any number of scenarios. Several well known tow surfers have died over the years. It's a young person's game and a young person who is willing to take those kind of risks. It's awesome to watch, but man......some scarey stuff. The power that waves like that generate is unbelievable.
