Island Air shutting down

Island Air CEO just announced tomorrow (11/10) will be last day of operations. Been in BK for about 3 weeks and apparently have no viable plan for exiting. About 400 employees that hopefully can find other jobs in a hurry.

Sorry to all the employees ... but to confirm flights are running normal schedule tomorrow, 10/10? Parents are in Kauai.

Oops, posted another one in general. It really sucks for these pilots. Most were there because they haven't got the call to Hawaiian yet.

I interviewed for a street captain job a few years ago. They flew me out for a captain interview then offered me a job as an FO. They promised me I would upgrade in "six months tops."

Sorry to everyone affected.

My parents rode on one of the last Island Air flights from Lihue to Honolulu and they told me the crew was absolutely fantastic - they knew it was their last day working but they finished with their heads held high ...good luck and best wishes to all the staff affected!

Who picks up their flying?

Probably nobody really. They were up to about 36 flights a day total I think, but the loads were very low. They went from a 37 seat airplane to a 69 seat airplane to a 74 (I think?) seat airplane in a matter of 2 years, while Hawaiian and Mokulele were also expanding their coverage, but not changing their product. It's very difficult to fill twice the number of seats when your competition is growing to cover any market growth (of which there was certainly some) at the same time.

I would guess that there will be a small uptick in the number of passengers on the other interisland carriers, but 2000 pax a day, spread between 5 destinations, isn't really enough for another carrier to commit resources for. If QX wasn't hurting for staffing so much I could see Alaska putting a few Qs out here but again, that's a really big airplane to fill up with not a lot of people. Southwest may see this an an opportunity, but again, flights out here attract passengers on frequency and it's hard to fill up a 150 seat plane at only a specific time of day.

So the OO rumor has a chance!

It's a little bit messed up how eager skywest guys are to crawl over the backs of guys who just lost their jobs so they can take their flying.

Pretty certain he's kidding, sheathe the pitchfork. While there may be some guys like that, I'll go out and say that 95% of the pilot group here is well aware of what management is doing to certain airlines and how their actions are affecting other pilots.

You talk like Skywest undercut island air and forced their bankruptcy. You can’t even peg this one on OO management much less the line pilots.
