Is this legal?

Oh the horror...

lol.

Can we not just enjoy a fine video?
No kidding! He's got over two dozen similar videos going back several months. (they are at the top of the video linked) I intend to savor, be inspired by and enjoy the hell outta each and every one of them and the thought of "oooh what do the regs say" is never going to cross my mind.

or maybe he's not in the US?

EDIT: Nvmd. I'm watching it now can see his tail#
Video is very cool

Extremely foolish of him to post a video showing that PLUS his tail

Just because it has an N number, doesn't mean it's in the US.

So I found this pretty cool video on Vimeo today. In it, a guy flies an experimental plane doing aeros at the tops of some clouds. Based on my knowledge of cloud clearance requirements, the only way I can think of this being legal is if his altitude was below 1,200 AGL and in class G.

Any thoughts? It looks like fun, but I just constantly imagine another airplane roaring through those clouds into a mid-air with this guy.

G goes lots higher in some places, 14500 or as published. I like acro in class B, at night, on the 4th of July, watching fireworks, while chatting with bored ATC about what maneuvers I'm doing. Then getting a hole shot in my wing on the way home from the coastal range, cause it's 4th of July, and it's California, and the folks be firing into the air. Not that I've ever done that. Just fantasizing. But wouldn't that be something?

Damn. Not only is that one of my favorite all time songs by Bilnd Faith, it's some beautiful flying.
Thank you for posting this.

Nice call. Great song.
Here's the list of covers:

Is it possible he could be in Class B. You just have to stay clear of clouds then. As far as I could tell thats what he was doing. He was just flying along the edge. Of course, can you do acro in class B? I dunno.

WHO CARES!!!

Dude, if you look at my Youtube and Vimeo pages, clearly not I lol... I am just simply pointing out the legality of it. Every single takeoff in the Pitts I would buzz the ever loving crap out of the tower. Had the FAA been in there once, I would be flipping burgers lol. Doesn't mean it was legal.

I don't see what all the fuss is about.

It's clear from the song that this guy is lost. Being a good pilot, he is squawking 7700 as he talks to ATC for help getting home, and every time he sees an opening in the cloud that is 4024 feet, 3 inches wide (2000 side-to-side), it closes up as he dives for it. So he immediately pulls back up, circles around, and tries again. Of course, notifying ATC with each turn. So he got lost in clouds while flying VFR. It happens. But he sucked up his pride and contacted ATC.

Not only is this pilot legal, but he should be highly commended for using all available resources to "find his way home."

I, sir, tip my hat to you. In every airspace.

A lot of people in this thread. No need to be mean, it's an interesting discussion and a cool video. I'd you don't want to be nice, go away.

And that's part of the problem here. We can all sit here and site regulations this guy may or may not have violated, or we can enjoy a nice video that some guy made, from who knows where, in what country no one knows, and move on with life not sweating things we have ZERO control over. I prefer to get my chonies wadded about things that actually matter to me.
