Is it just me or is the food in first suck?

I got into Dubai last night from Dulles on a UAL 777. I picked up a bottle of fine Vodka for the 4 man cockpit crew. A very large stick of Toblerone and a large box of Taffy for the cabin crew. I was asked a bunch about the attractions and what to do's in Dubai from the crew. I was graciously given a first class seat and was very very thankful. From my standpoint I could not of been any happier.

However, from a paying passengers standpoint, I think UAL needs to improve their product. The food did not taste very good. The steak tasted like it had been cooked days prior, and simply reheated. (which is what really did happen). LOL. In my opinion, you get more bang for your buck in business class, than you do in first. The seats almost lie flat in business, you get the same food, same movies, same everything. But your paying double the price.

I have to admit though, I got on, sat down, started eating an hour later, watched a movie, went to sleep, the next thing I know, we only have 2 hours and 30 minutes to go. I must of been knocked out for 7 hours or so. They served us a light snack, which I declined, because I snacked on a hot sandwich when I woke up from my nap.

Like I said, I was very fortunate and thankful to ride on them, I just know they would make more money if they had a better product to offer.

Oh and by the way, a funny fact, even though the seats in first recline all the way, my feet still hit the end, so I could not fully extend my legs. And I stand exactly 72 inches tall. But in business, since theres no stop by your feet, you could essentially stretch out a much as you like.

Compared to coach, no way. Compared to a $10 meal at chilis, yes. Except for maybe the Ice Cream Sundaes with your choice of 30 toppings on CAL. Those things trump all.

Then again CAL doesn't have first, just "business first".....so I guess I've never truly experienced "first class".

Emirates is the way to go if one is paying for a first class seat on an ultra-long haul flight. Very few airlines come close to them in service and in-flight entertainment........but I'm biased.

typhoonpilot,
I think most international airline's service/food is better than any of the US carriers.

mrivc,
i think you were VERY fortunate to sit in first class. Their policy doesnt allow non-rev'rs to sit in first unless they have their sponsor with them. I assume thats the same with the jumpseaters. I took UAs biz class twice, from ICN-SFO. NWs WBC class is, by far, better, i think.

I try to support local companies when flying. However this last trip to Australia was my last on UA, back to QF or DL when they start up. Service was terrible. From sour milk for my baby to no bulkhead sleeper for her like we had requested weeks prior. They even told us to take her back to our seat because the airplane was too dirty for her to be walking around.

I'm not a fan of UA.

Theres always that one guy who doesn't read the post, or choses to ignore it. As I stated, I was very fortunate to have a great seat. I was speaking from a paying pax standpoint.

Hey Tim,

I called your mobile today. You around tomorrow?

I think Emirates beats out just about any airline in the world. No one even comes close. When your riding in first on Emirates, they make you feel like a sheikh. I would tell people about Emirates service in the early 90's, and they would be like.......who?

On the flip side, you're not paying for a meal. You're paying for transportation. Period. You want a great meal, go to a 5 star restaurant.

Uh, no, when you pay for first class you are paying for both. When you pay for economy you're paying for transportation only.

That still doesnt change the fact that the service is sub par to US carriers.

I've seen the fares my company pays for business class and better. It more than covers the cost of transportation.

I do have to say, my most recent trip on UAL from SFO-HKG was in a 747400 in the new business class config. Very comfy seats and the food was good.

There was a huge difference in service between the BKK based FAs and the regular US based UAL FAs when I'd ride the flight from ICN back to the states though.

And I'll agree, the US airlines could take some lessons from the foreign carriers.

On my recent trip to the east coast to give a checkride I flew First and paid for first. Wasn't too pleased to hear "I'm sorry we are all out of XXXX, here's a pasta carb fest for you to enjoy". Which surprised me because DAL, CAL usually have great First/Business service and food.

Sorry, Polar, no it doesn't. Maybe for that one seat, but with the fares the trailer trash are paying in back, the 1st class is subsidizing the rest of the airplane.

Again...ITS NOT A RESTAURANT! You are buying seat space from A to B. Period, end of story.

Besides, what kind of gourmet food do you expect out of a cart trucked to the airport and prepared in a convection oven?

Wolfgang Puck?

It's the same as people who complain about the quality of the camera in their phone. IT'S A PHONE! Use it to make a call and use a real camera to take a picture.

I can honestly say the food in First Class on Emirates rivals just about any gourmet restaurant. I think the fact that most US carriers product is crap, skews your view of what it really should be. If you don't believe me, go type in first class emirates on youtube, and you'll find a video showing their food selection. You'll see.

Keep it up guys. Just makes us look better, and better, and better. We'll be more than happy to take all the big money travelers that y'all want to piss off.

You wouldn't believe the quality of the food that our cabin attendants prepare and serve in our Falcon 2000. MMMMmmmMMMMmmmm!

:D

I'm moving to Tinian next month which is just south of Saipan and not looking forward to the flight at all. I am flying AA 777 from LAX to Tokyo in coach due to no money. Has anyone here flown this flight before and how bad was it?

My two aunts just got into Dubai from Atlanta sitting in coach. They said they couldnt feel their legs anymore. Haha. But that was a 16 hour flight.

That sucks. First I have a 5 hour 30 minute flight from MCO to LAX then 11 hour 30 minute flight LAX to Tokyo then 3 hour 30 minute flight from Tokyo to Saipan, Doh!
