iPads...

Nexus 7 is essentially an ASUS tablet, isn't it?
ASUS is merely the manufacturer. It is a pure Google tablet as far as OS, design choices, and $$$. Supposedly Google is taking a loss on the tablet as it costs ~$185+packaging to manufacture the N7.

I have an opportunity to pick up a barely used 10" Samsung Galaxy 4G tablet at a good price (legit, not stolen). Has anybody seen how the GPS performs in this? How about daylight readability, and battery life?

I'm considering trying this with Naviator...

The GPS works great in the Galaxy II WiFi tablet I got. It has a number of brightness display controls (including auto, which works pretty well) -- never had a problem reading it in sunlight. Battery life is several days if you're only using it a couple hours a day; reported 8 hours straight.

So.. for all you iPad kings.. I've got one my company bought me. What is the best ap and antenna for aviation in the thing?

Check the lav.... there is a thread about Ipad vs Ipad 2.

I believe the best app is Foreflight(?) 75 a year or so. GPS... Bad Elf.

YMMV.

ATP @ Arizona State is requiring iPads so this Android lover is a bit disgruntled about it... Anyways, I got a 32gb wifi iPad 3, I'm planning to use tethering to get Internet access but not sure if that'll be enough for location/position instead of GPS. If not, Bad Elf. Also school gives us discounts on ForeFlight...

My question, is there a decent logbook app, free or paid, which syncs with the cloud...??

The built in GPS in the 3G version gives me 5 meter accuracy in Foreflight. ATP's discount gave me foreflight for $60 bucks for the year. The more I've been using Foreflight the more I love it.

Did you use your book stipend for the iPad? I just couldn't pay another 120 bucks for GPS. Oh how much I hate Apple's guts...

I use an iPad 1, wifi 16Gb and a dual Bluetooth GPS. Thinking of getting the stratus receiver though and dumping the dual.

My wife and I were going to get an iPad this year anyways...I found an iPad 2 64GB Verizon 3G in Craigslist for $500 bucks, so we paid for it straight out. My wife rocks an iPhone and there are multiple iPods running around the house. I'm not a fan of the Mac OS, but iOS is pretty slick.

My ForeFlight wanted to do a software upgrade (software, not charts) last week. Today I was taxing for takeoff cleared to cross runway 21 on the way to 26R, the active runway. As I approach runway 21 I heard a voice; "Approaching Runway 21/03". It took me a minute to realize the voice came from my ipad. Pretty soon I heard "Entering Runway 21/03". The ipad also has a visual warning on it. I wasn't on a taxi chart, just the sectional.

After my run-up I approached the hold short bars of 26R and it did it again.

Cool new feature!

Do you have the regular or Pro subscription?

HA! We were wondering what was suddenly talking to us in the plane a few days ago. My co-pilot had the Ipad on his lap and we could hear something talking. We thought the panel mounted 496 was talking but it's now obvious it was the Ipad.

And just to add to the thread, we have a primary and back-up Ipad w/Foreflight in all 11 of our 206's. We used to struggle finding paper charts and therefore moved to digital. A little over 2 years later and we haven't looked back.

With the rumors of the iPad mini and now a date set in October for Apple might be when I spring for an iPad. I tried my friends iPad and just found it to be to large for a small cockpit. Android would be great, naviator worked out decently, but it seems for true support you need iOS. I tried it on my galaxy nexus and it was awesome, but foreflight just seems to offer everything....plus the school gets a nice discount
