iPads...

What size of ipad do you have? I plan to put 7 gigs of my stuff on it. After that it will pretty much be foreflight.

Do i bite the bullet and get the 64? Or is that just overkill?

Foreflight seems to suggest the 64 if you're going to be storing other stuff on it. http://www.foreflight.com/support/buying-guide

That's one thing that really ticks me off about the iPad, no expandable storage, and $100 price bump from 32GB to 64GB... seriously Apple? for what probably costs apple an extra $10 in flash.

Not sure if this was directed at me, but I have the 64 GB iPad and have already used up about 6 GB with Foreflight downloads and other apps. I don't even have my music or videos on it yet...I'd say go at least 32 GB.

I just used an iPad as an EFB on a long-ish flight for the first time. (ECP -> MTH and back) I have to say it was rather nice, although with my polarized sunglasses it kept going blank if I turned it the wrong way. I don't have a GPS on it, so I just used it as a chart/AFD and got static weather on the ground ... but with how well it did that I admit that I'm tempted by Stratus now. Anyone used it?

Would have saved me about twenty minutes of time spent talking to Flight Watch across four legs, though I admit I was impressed by their professionalism and knowledge. Are those guys Lockheed Martin?

(NB. I'm in love with the C-210D I was flying. That thing's a -beast-)

Another noob question, if you have an iPad in your "electronic flightbag" (that is how the Army calls it) you would have to have a data plan with it right? Or can you actually just load up a database into it (cross sectionals, charts etc) and track via GPS?

I just got the Samsung Galaxy II tablet and downloaded the Avilution app. Seems pretty awesome so far.

You don't need a data plan if you don't want enroute weather updates, etc. You can download all charts (or as many as you can fit) beforehand and use the GPS to track across them inflight.

To be clear. If you buy an iPad and want to use the built in gps you do need to buy a wifi+3G version. The data plan is optional and you can still use the gps without an active data plan. If you buy a wifi only iPad then you'll need to buy a Bluetooth gps of some type separately.

I "want" to go with an Android device because I prefer flexibility and open software... but I'm finding that the Android tablet field is still just really weak on applications in general and especially for pilots. The Asus Transformer seems like a good option. I'm also really intrigued by the Xyboard, in the 8.2" format as I think that'd fit much better as a knee board... but it seems to be only available through Verizon contracts and I'd rather have that month-to-month flexibility so if I'm not using it much over winter I'm not paying for it. It's looking more and more like I'll end up with an iPad 2.

Those of you with iPad 2 in the cockpit, what sort of battery life do you get with general aviation use?

Do you have any knee board style holders that you really like?

To add on to this, the wife+3G version does have the built in GPS, but some folks are saying that it is not as accurate as 3rd party options such as the Bad Elf GPS that retails for about $99.

Thanks for the recommendation. Is this one wifi only? Do you think the 7" screen would be too small to use effectively as a teaching tool, for showing students various images, books, and how to use web sites for weather and such?

It is WIFI only. The thing is powerful for being so small so they had to cut some features (4g radio, sd card). I would recommend going to best buy or something where you can see the actual size of the tablet. The Nexus 7 isn't released yet (sometime here very soon) but there are other 7 inch tablets you can look at for a general idea on size. Review sites say this is the perfect tablet for someone that doesn't need/want the larger more expensive iPad.

Rumor has it a 7" iPad in the $200 range could be popping up later this year. I dont know about android apps, but there Are a ton of iOS apps for the iPad related to aviation.

We will see. This same exact rumor appeared when the Kindle Fire was released. This time it is getting bounced around because of the Nexus 7. There is no evidence to support the rumor at this time.

What you will find is that tech blogs will push this stuff just so they can get clicks. Biggest reason to avoid them.

Probably. But it does stand a good chance to be something this fall. Compete with the other tablets in the market.
