Instructing at WMU

So I've thought about applying at WMU for a instructing position. I've heard some bad things from my friend, and was wondering if this is true. I know some of you work there so please chime in.

I've heard instructors are not treated all that well so employee moral is low. She complained about "below poverty" level income and almost was on food stamps. She didn't like how the school was closed for one or two weeks during Christmas break, so therefore no income, except for a small stipend. I hear about a 6 month contract as well.

Yet I've heard good things. Getting new SR-22's in the fleet. This is good because I have about 20 hours of Cirrus time. WMU is...well....a college.... and therefore in a college town, with a young crowd.

So my friend, told me not to come, but I'm taking that with a grain of salt. Also what are the hours like and can I build multi-time right as i start? I just want someone elses perspective.

I recently graduated from Western and while I wasn't involved in the flight program, and I didn't work for the school, I can tell you a few things about working for the university.

I worked IT at the university, and while my boss and co-workers were wonderful people that I enjoyed working with, the amount of red tape that we had to put up with was amazing. There were so many levels of BS to wade through (often going up to the president of the university) that next to nothing got done in our department. I can't imagine that the college of aviation is any different.

Kalamazoo is a great place to live, and I'm sure you'd dig it after living in North Dakota for so long. It's not a huge town by any means, but it's not small either. I think Kalamazoo and Portage together have somewhere around 100,000 people. Battle Creek on the other hand, is a complete bag. That's where the flight program is located at, and I wouldn't recommend spending more time there than you need to.

Photopilot worked at Western and loved it. I went there and loved it. I'd also highly recommend Kalamazoo as a place to chill.

You in the DFW area right now? If so hit me up sometime and we can talk about all this over lunch.
