Initial CFI Airplane Type

Initial CFI Airplane Oral

I took my ride with the FSDO over ten years ago so I'm sure there are some better gouges out there. The main changes since that time seem to be the FAA's areas for special emphasis.

The oral was pretty brutal.
I took my initial CFI this year.

My oral lasted for 7hrs! YES, SEVEN HOURS for oral only! He had asked and questioned me god darn questions he found from his thick file.

I sat with the FAA Inspector (Minneapolis FSDO) whole day long! I nearly gone crazy.

I started at 8.30a.m and ended at 4.30p.m. and there is half an hour lunch break in the afternoon.

Re: Initial CFI Airplane

If you are going to take the initial CFI checkride with the FSDO, do you have to do the flight portion in a complex airplane like you have to do for the initial Commercial? or can you complete the flight portion in a normal skyhawk 172s? Logically it seems like you would have to do it in a complex aircraft due to the fact that you will be performing commercial maneuvers and you will be certified to teach commercial pilots.
For my initial CFI, it took me 3.5 hours for flight portion! And it was conducted one week after my oral. It was a brutal and energy draining of 7 hours oral examination.

We (Inspector and I) flew two hours in non-complex aircraft (which is the Skyhawk) and then, one and half hour in complex aircraft (Cutlass).

Eventually, I passed by initial CFI at one sitting! :D

You do realize that you need 15 hours multi PIC to be eligible for MEI, right?

Also raises the question of still needing to use a complex single for the CFI-single engine airplane.
If you get the MEI after the CFII, that fulfills the 'complex' requirement, and the CFI-ASE can be added-on with a C-152.

I'm glad they finally got around to fixing the flight instructor PTS. Every since March of 2009 there wasn't anything in there about requiring a complex airplane. What a big headache that was figuring out it was a mistake.

I'm sure this has been mentioned in the thread thus far but I'm too lazy to read through it!

That is how I did my initial CFI. Did all the maneuvers in a G1000 C172 and demonstrated complex abilities in a RG (we only have 1 RG at our flight school and availability was crap so I primarily trained in the g1000). Demonstrating complex abilities solely meant pulling the gear pump circuit breaker and teaching how to pump it down.

Good luck with the ride!
