The reason they didn't called them ERJ was marketing related. They didn`t wanted to sell an other regional aircraft but try to, at least with the name, compete with the big boys.

Who knew radials were still in use? Just kidding, that smoke is probably from them burning off the preservative in the engine fuel system. Funny reactions sometimes from people when you attempt to start an engine after installation for the first time and it doesn't light off, next try it starts with a cloud of smoke. I've only heard of this phenomonon never actually witnessed it.

Be on the first flight in the morning out after the planes sat all night on almost any plane. Especially in the winter months. I see it all the time.
