I lived there for a year, first year in town and it's not worth it. Then I lived in an OLD house down off 7th and chestnut for a year (500 bucks all utilities included!) then I lucked out and got a really big 2 bedroom in the getto for 450 a month and lived there for 2 years, nice apartment, huge... cheap.

Yeah you can find some pretty good deals here, as long as you look for the privately-owned houses or apartments. Actually, the cheapest way to live is rent a 4-bedroom house and split it up with 3 other roommates...and they have at least a 2-car garage. One thing I'd like about living in a house is you can turn your home theatre/music up as loud as you want without the neighbors hearing.

well guys i really like these ideas. Only thing now is I got to wait on my potential roomate to be accepted.

Well, like what other people said... I think it's good for young Freshmen to do the dorm thing for the first year, then move to an on-campus apartment or off-campus apartment/house. This way you can make friends and know your roommates before you move in with them. The dorm thing wasn't for me because of my age. Later on when you are living off-campus it can often save you money...assuming you have a car anyway, or if you don't then assuming you live in a house within walking distance.

Hey I heard a couple lines about dance music. I personally would like to welcome you. By the way Jace, I love that song from Kruder and Dorfmeister - Eastwest. Well coming to apartments, I was 20 when I got my university apartment. Mainly due to credits. It is the best place I have stayed so far for college, it is close to classes, and also cheap. I have some photos posted on this site. http://community.webshots.com/user/Dj_To_Rule
I do recommend the dorms for the beginning though. Social environment etc. I still kept a 6 meal plan to see people.

Once again welcome.

Oh man I can't. Structural build quality in ND is virtually non-existant, therefore I can even hear the people above me having sex. Man that girl is wild in bed LOL. But at least they're enjoying good sex. Anyway TMI....... I have a pretty loud subwoofer and I turn it way down during movies...the people above me (with the screaming girl at night) always play their music loud, but I doubt it's really that loud - it's just the 1/8 inch thick balsa wood floor that makes it sound loud.

Speaking of home theatre, I'll be getting this soon:

4805_1.jpg

InFocus 4805. Prices are finally affordable for these things... $750. Now I can play GT4 on it's native 16:9 resolution and watch movies. Movie night anyone?

yes but do you have it on a 100" screen similar to what we have at our house? ;)

mind you, we are using the projector that was installed in City Hall up till a few years back

(nice thing about having a roommate who does professional a/v installs for a living!! free loot!)

two words for you, screendoor and rainbow effect :)
I had an X1 and it drove me crazy, went back to RPTV's. Hopefully that has a 4x color wheel.

I believe I'll spend my xmas bonus building a pair of these
http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=11321
or maybe a center channel first to evaluate, then a pair of them, haven't decided!
yikes, maybe not. the crossover network alone is about $150 in parts. Yeesh.

you know, i admire these DIY guys for modelling the speakers/crossovers/enclosures etc etc etc ad nauseum... ive even known a few in my day

but to be honest, ive never heard ANYTHING made by a guy in his garage sound worth a DAMN even if it was technically perfect on the paper.

on the other hand, the 1979 Marantz HD-880 speakers i picked up from a dead guy's house and refurbed the surround on them... sing like the most beautiful angels in the sky

anyhow, i think we're digressing......... im sure we could discuss at length over a brew!

The 4805 doesn't have the screen door effect as bad as the X1. As long as you sit far enough back it won't be so noticeable. Can't afford a big CRT projector...so DLP it is! :)

My parents gave me a pair of their old Marantz speakers. The driver was 12" with a mid-range speaker and tweeter. I'm not sure what the model was, but I think it was the HD550's. Really old but they still sound great.

They used to have a Marantz amp, but I think they threw it away. Now those vintage Marantz amps (the kind with the brushed steel and wood casing) are going for quite a bit of money on eBay.

you might check out the home theater forums and try to get an older CRT projector, the DLP projectors are so cheap these days they don't command much!
Und used to have nice CRT projectors then ripped them out and put in the new ones while I was there.

my old man still has a vintage marantz setup, it's very nice. The 250 series power amp he has is pretty sought after I guess.
The old speakers are Ok, the XO networks are basic, or nonexistant, but the drivers are probably better quality than you see today. Even high end speakers today are pretty much crap, terrible wire, terrible XO's, mediocre drivers, blech.

I'll put my $150 pair of bookshelves up against my old man's sonus fabers any day.

Anyway, the guy that designed that CC is pretty published and a great engineer, he works for seimens semiconductor during the day I believe. Send me $500 and I'll build you one to try for yourself :p

fortuantely i snagged the amp that the old man had with them as well!

it needs a little cleaning, some dirt in the volume pot but other than that, wow it has some WARMTH and incredible clarity and transparent mids... really fills the room with sound

from what I gather, the amp/receiver is nothing all that special, just a mid-range model from the time, but it sure sounds great. would love to aquire some of their high end gear from the same time period to match to the speakers even better.

also.... the very top tweeter on one of my speakers is busted :( and fat chance of me ever finding an orig marantz part to replace it with... any ideas what i should stick in there?

yeah i need the tweeter off these.

infact these are really similar to the speakers i have, same components, just a slightly different layout

4-way madness

Yes, there are a few professional audio repair boards out there, I'm sure they can point you to the right place.
Now, can I remember the URL? no.
