THANK YOU for jogging my memory on this. "Carriage" refers to the conduct of a person or cargo from one place to another--NOT to the "rental" of "a" seat.

News flash for all you skinny people: you're shaped the way you are and we fat people are shaped the way we are largely because of genetics. Anyone who disagrees with this doesn't understand either genetics or differences in metabolism (a product of...surprise...genetics). Sure, exercise can have an effect on this, but the simple truth is that if Szluka or Ed put on an extra 10 lbs of flab and then they and I had a contest to see who could lose 10 lbs faster, I'd have to work much harder than they to lose that 10 lbs.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually everything I have read about this (and I have read a lot) suggests that the majority of overweight people get that way as a result of personal choices. From the information I have come across something like less that 5% of obese people (the ones who we are talking about who cant fit into an airline seat) are obese because of medical or genetic reasons. The other 95+% got that way as a result of diet and lack of exercise. Compare the US to every other nation in the world and we have by far the highest rate of obesity.

Granted many people may deal with issues like slower metabolisms, but that means one needs to adjust calorie intake and increase activity to raise the metabolism as much as possible. These folks may never be string bean thin, but we are not talking about people who are a little over weight in this instance. Some pretty darn big people can fit into an airline seat and still get the armrest down. This is only an issue for substantially obese individuals.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

Wow 3 pages in one night.

This has been discussed before but obviously it still touches some nerves. Should we talk about PFT?

I weigh in at 260 lbs. If SWA wants me to buy two seats NO PROBLEM - as long as I can sprawl in two seats!

Two seats on SWA is still cheaper than First Class on any other airline.

It all comes down to weight and bulk rather than people. Airplanes can only carry so much. Also, does anyone here like being stuck in a middle seat between two fat people? I didn't think so!

I like that. But don't sing that song around the woman in question here. She'll end up needing THREE seats.

Aloft, I sympathize with you, my friend. It ain't easy to get that 10 or 15 pounds that you want to lose off. I know. But we're not talking about 10-15 pounds here. We're not even talking about 20 or 30. We're talking about being so big that you need two seats.

Now, there may be a few people -- a very few -- who can say it's all genetics. But our problem with obesity for the most part is not due to genetics. It's because we don't accept that you simply cannot eat more calories than you burn if you want to keep your weight under control.

It's really a simple equation, whether your metabolism is slow or fast. Take in more calories than you burn, and you gain weight. Take in less than you burn, and you lose weight.

Good luck with your weight loss program, aloft. It sounds like you are well on your way to getting to where you want to be!

Why? Being an average fat person, my metabolism--to be more specific, my basal metabolic rate--is much, much slower than theirs, which means simply that my body is more efficient in its use of fuel (food) than a skinny guy's--and, conversely, much less efficient at burning stored fuel (bodyfat). A good analogy (at least for this crowd) is the difference in fuel burn for a turbojet to produce the same thrust at low altitude vs at high altitude.

Now mind you, this isn't merely the whining of a fat person; I'm busting my ass to rid myself of this obstacle to an aviation career (I've dropped ~40 lbs since the JC Scottsdale meet-n-greet in Feb), but I know what it's like to be extremely uncomfortable in that 18"-wide seat, very nearly having to ask for a seatbelt extension.

[/ QUOTE ]

B.S.!!!!! I was fat all through school and high school, but in college, I lost 65 lbs. and kept it off for over 5 years. Since law school I've slowly put the weight back on. The reason is not genetics. The reason is that my work is sedentary, I don't exercise, I watch too much T.V., and I eat too much ice cream and other junk food (in general I just eat too much). There are people who have disorders that cause them to be overweight. Those people represent a TINY portion of the obese people in this country. The vast majority of overweight people are overweight because they eat too much and exercise too little. Kudos to you on losing weight, but I think your success proves my point. [/rant]

Also, you do not have to be Kate Moss to fit in an airline seat. I'm 5'8" and ~240 lbs., and I really don't have any trouble. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif

ya and you don't think that none of your butt hangs over into someone else's seat? Lets be honest, if you take 3 normal sized people you're all going to be somewhat squished because i know very few people whos butts' are actually 17" wide.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

So if a fat person is sitting on half of your seat then you should also get to pay half the fare for the seat. It just doesn't work like this though.

No, I don't. The armrest comes down, and I'm pretty sure my behind is not oozing under the 1-2" space under the armrest. I do have a problem with my shoulders, but that has nothing to do with my weight . . . I've always been broad across the shoulders, even when I was skinny.

Let's not argue just because of our weights people! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

Well you all made me curious so I just measured my butt /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (well, I mean, what it takes up on a seat) and it was 17". But some one with a 20" spread wouldn't neccessarily be occupying part of the other seats because the arm rests would squish you up and hold you in your own.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

Well, the average waist size for men is now 40 inches. And the average size for a woman is a size 12.

If you divide the 40 inch waist in two, you're looking at 20 inches. Then take off another few inches because nobody has a zero inch width -- on me, it looks like there's another two inches on each side -- and you're looking at 17-18 inches.

So, yeah, the average Joe can fit into an airplane seat, even though we are rapidly becoming a nation of lardbutts.

Think rv7's cousin would call some black guy the "n" word mid-flight? My guess is probably not. But calling him a 'fat •', well, that's just calling a spade a spade, right?

[/ QUOTE ]
Your guess is right, he would not. However, I would argue that there are just as many ignorant poeple who would drop the "n" word as there are who are rude enough to call someone a "fat fck," at least here in the South anyways.

Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

If you have a weight issue, you need to accept it and plan accordingly when flying.

My little (I should say younger ) brother weighs over 300 lbs. (You'd never think we were related). Anyway - he has been planning a study abroad to the UK, leaving today I think. After thinking it over, my parents decided to upgrade him to business class or something similar (flying on BA) because of his size.

Its not fair to fellow passengers to be hanging over into their space making for a very uncomfortable flight, especially on longer trips. Accept your problem and pay the extra $$$.

Isn't this discussion all about weight?? Or am I missing the point????

And on that note, if you saw me you would not thinkI am obese. I am 6' 4" 260 pounds. Most of it is in my beer belly. According to the Body Mass Index, I am Obese (31.65bmi) But the lady in the story is at least double mine.

I believe what Brian is saying is don't be biased in your personal opinion on the issue merely because of the weight you happen to be.

Alright! Something I'm below average in that I can be proud of. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Obesity (to me at least) is BOTH genetic and behaviorly induced. I believe people are genetically pre-disposed to be obese, but they can alter their behaviors to overcome it. My mother is overweight, and I have the joy of inheriting those genes. So, I watch what I eat, exercise when I can, and I try to stay active. My brother is 6'4" and under 200 lbs, so he got my dad's beanpole genes. The boy can eat a horse and LOSE weight. What I really hate is all these diet ads saying "Overwieght? It's not your fault! It's the hormones!"
