Re: If your large don\'t fly SWA

News flash for all you skinny people: you're shaped the way you are and we fat people are shaped the way we are largely because of genetics. Anyone who disagrees with this doesn't understand either genetics or differences in metabolism (a product of...surprise...genetics). Sure, exercise can have an effect on this, but the simple truth is that if Szluka or Ed put on an extra 10 lbs of flab and then they and I had a contest to see who could lose 10 lbs faster, I'd have to work much harder than they to lose that 10 lbs. Why? Being an average fat person, my metabolism--to be more specific, my basal metabolic rate--is much, much slower than theirs, which means simply that my body is more efficient in its use of fuel (food) than a skinny guy's--and, conversely, much less efficient at burning stored fuel (bodyfat). A good analogy (at least for this crowd) is the difference in fuel burn for a turbojet to produce the same thrust at low altitude vs at high altitude.
Now mind you, this isn't merely the whining of a fat person; I'm busting my ass to rid myself of this obstacle to an aviation career (I've dropped ~40 lbs since the JC Scottsdale meet-n-greet in Feb), but I know what it's like to be extremely uncomfortable in that 18"-wide seat, very nearly having to ask for a seatbelt extension.

B.S.!!!!! I was fat all through school and high school, but in college, I lost 65 lbs. and kept it off for over 5 years. Since law school I've slowly put the weight back on. The reason is not genetics. The reason is that my work is sedentary, I don't exercise, I watch too much T.V., and I eat too much ice cream and other junk food (in general I just eat too much). There are people who have disorders that cause them to be overweight. Those people represent a TINY portion of the obese people in this country. The vast majority of overweight people are overweight because they eat too much and exercise too little. Kudos to you on losing weight, but I think your success proves my point. [/rant]
Also, you do not have to be Kate Moss to fit in an airline seat. I'm 5'8" and ~240 lbs., and I really don't have any trouble. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif
