If money were no object, which aviator watch would you wear?

Re: If money were no object, which aviator watch would you w

Sorry SteveC & Capt.Caucasian :banghead: By the way, I am dealing with RGM now for a repair job on a Rolex. Their customer service via e-mail and or phone is sweet.

Running shoes, "Duck Head" brand khakis and the Auburn shirt doesn't say, "Rob me" enough already overseas? :)

I wear Eurotrash Pumas, tattered jeans, and a Manchester United jersey.

That's hott. :)

+1 more on the Expedition watch. I have had that thing for 6 freakin' years and haven't even had to change the battery. Very useful with the 2 time zones, since I can't ever remember what zulu time is...especially when globe trotting. If money was no object, I probably would have a cheap one...they last me longer.

It's like sunglasses...cheap $5 pair last me FOREVER. I spend more than $20, then I will inadvertently destroy it. Sure wouldn't want to do that with a Brietling!

My current Aviation Watch Collection:

None of them are Aviation Watches...

Festina Sport (probably 4 different Festinas, all with the batteries empty)
A Casio G-Shock
Most worn is a Seiko Sports Automatic
Used to own a Breitling but damaged it during accident.

Looking at this one, once I make my way back to Germany:

Or this one:

Even though I could afford a Brietling, I sport the G-shocks. For $30-40 bucks you get all the features you need and durability. I hate having to worry about getting the watch scratched or dirty. I don't care if it does have sapphire glass or some scratch proof material. That sucker is going to get dinged if your operating in a 121 environment on a daily basis.

I love the Expedition.

While your point is valid about the flying environment exposing a watch to more potential damage than just casual wear, I don't agree that a good watch is "going to get dinged".

This is the Omega X-33 that I've worn for the last 10 years of flying fighters in the USAF. If you want to talk about an environment that can damage a watch, this is it. Cramped cockpits, G-forces, and the like mean that watches often get banged against things. In my experience, it is the big metal longeron rail that goes under the canopy that happens to sit just above wrist height.

The fact is, I've not taken care of this watch for literally thousands of sorties in the cockpit...and outside of a few scratches on the back side of the band (ironically, where my wrist touches the desk when I'm outside the cockpit!) the thing is still tip top.

It is proof that a quality watch can really withstand the wear-and-tear it was designed to handle.

Nice! Oddly enough, my old UPT Casio G-Shock still holds up. Has needed 2 new batteries, but still keeps on chugging.

I still have my issued G-shock, a DW-5600E. The band and the bezel have both come apart due to the rubber just physically drying out and cracking. In this shot you can see that I've replaced the band with a nylon Timex band and the bottom of the bezel has completely come off (the "G-Shock" part is missing!). I recently ordered replacement parts on the 'Bay, and it should be back to perfect shape after that.

Ordinarily I wouldn't care about a 10-year-old digital that didn't cost me anything to begin with...but there's sentimental value to a military issue watch.

Re: If money were no object, which aviator watch would you w

fossils feel cheap to me (construction wise, not $$$ wise). kind of feel like a "throw-away" watch or something, never liked them.

if money was no factor, Bell&Ross

i've always liked the way fossils look and feel, i've gone through a few of them, the only thing i have against them is that the batteries don't last too long.

if money wasn't a factor, one of the newer Breitlings with the digital display, that way UTC is one less thing I have to worry about. just beware of the fake ones you can get on the streets of Beijing, yes they look good and only cost 20 bucks, but they only last a couple months at best!

I'm a little partial to my Breitling(s)...:D

Re: If money were no object, which aviator watch would you w

This has probably been asked before but how did you get your callsign?

Well...unfortunately it's long story best told over a bar top. It had to do with being accused of breaking into a government contractor's computer system to obtain test questions.

I'm sure MikeD would understand when I say, "cooperate and graduate" and "if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'".

If money were no object, I'd have Big Ben slung from a gold chain around my neck like Flava Flav.

Re: If money were no object, which aviator watch would you w

ha, I was looking at some of the Breitlings, and apparently they have the "Emergency" model that transmits on 121.5. Interesting concept.

You know, if all the troublemakers I deal with would just listen to that bit of advice, my job would be MUCH EASIER!!!

So, you're the guy that keeps me from using my thumb drive at work, huh? Thanks a lot!!! :laff:
