I didn't meet the mins, but I sent my resume in anyway.

I just want to add one thing here. SOMETIMES, it is worth it to apply somewhere if you are below the stated minimums. While a pain for the HR person to wade through all the crap applications and resumes, it does sometimes pay off.

Now saying that, I can see how it gets annoying, especially for part 135 PIC postions getting resumes from 500 hour wannabe's... but for something like Colgan (whos mins are 1000 and 100) it might not be a bad idea to shoot them a resume if your a few hundred short on the TT.

If the HR person has to throw out your resume, fine. Thats why they make the big bucks, right?

Shotgunning resumes for jobs you are completely unqualified for (both technically and by the minimums) does nothing to help out the people whom are qualified.
No it doesn't. Shotgunning of resumes has existed since before the concept of a resume even existed.

So, people have been killing each other since the dawn of time. Just because it happens, doesn't mean it should be encouraged to continue.

Slow down people, the journey is much more fun than the destination. Apply when you honestly feel you are qualified, but damn, follow the rules laid out by the prospective employer.

How many of you that are advocating not following the requests are employed?

How many of you that are saying you SHOULD comply with the requests of the post are NOT employed?

Raise your hands high now so we can see 'em.

Ahh.

another thing to consider is that if you're on unemployment, you have to do so many work searches per week to be eligable for benefits. Sending resume = work search. In texas at least, you have to do that 4 times per week.

I once applied for a job that required 4000TT. I had 1200TT + internal recommendations. I was hired.

Let me throw this into the mix. Colgan minimums are 1000/100. Would it be wise to apply with 800/70? Would would the HR folks think?

I can tell you with absolute certainty that you will not even get considered for an interview. Airlineapps.com will throw your application out before it gets to the HR people... that being said I heard a rumor about mins dropping... just a rumor folks just a rumor...

I think its very easy for people, especially those who are unemployed, to get in the mindset of "I'll just give it a try...the worst that will happen is they'll turn me down." Its definitely not just aviation though, its pretty much any decent job that's available right now.

As people have pointed out though, applying for a job is not like buying a lottery ticket and hoping you get lucky. There are posted minimums for a reason and if you don't meet them you should focus on finding a way to acquire those minimums because there is no luck involved in the selection process. I would love to fly the space shuttle but you don't see me sending my resume to NASA every 3 months. Lets face facts people!

If you a apply for a job and don't meet the minimum requirements using a application service like this, they won't even see it at all.

That's the key, an internal recommendation (ie: Networked).

But if you're Billy Bob sending me a resume with 800 hours when I've clearly asked for those with less than 2500 not apply, it's going to take far more than a free beer coupon and a coupon for a free lap dance to look at your resume.

I've said it a million times, spend less time comparing girth online and more time making connections.

And "anonymity" on the internet died with the world's greatest band, "Milli Vanilli". Google's forever, unfortunately.

I applied for a job requiring 3000 hours, an ATP and 500 turbojet. I had 5000 hrs, 1500 tpic in a turbo prop, 3500+ tt in a tp. All I got was an email saying I wasn't qualified.

No matter how much I disagree, they set the mins, and I was expecting the outcome.

Can you get hired at a job without meeting any of the requirements? Sure. I didn't meet ANY of the requirements of my current job other than the age requirement.

Moral of the story, you can be under-qualified and still get a job...as a gate agent.

If you want to get a FLYING job, I'd take the advice of the people who have flying jobs you want to have, and not argue with them. I haven't been around long, but I've figured out that its easier to learn with your mouth closed.

This is an oldy, but some of you that have been around with us for a while (like Delta pre-bankruptcy) will remember this:

"Horse.... Water.... Why don't he drink?!"

I think a lot of times it is insurance mins, and they might have to pay a lot more for someone less. My understanding is that there is a little negotiation that goes on, especially part 91 ops.

Only 2 a week in OH.

"Horse.... Water.... Why don't he drink?!"

Because he isn't wearing a carrot on his head??? (I know you watch that kids program).

thats just it though, without ego or snowflake-specialness, i can honestly look in the mirror and say my 1200TT *may, for some operations* be more valuable than say someone with 1500TT in skydiving planes, or even 1500TT of CFI'ing at the same airport/general area.... ive crossed every direction of this fair country in a C172, generally with crappy equipment, in all kinds of weather, with all decisionmaking, planning, logistics arrangement, EVERYTHING handled by just me. also with my aerobatics background and documented success, i can honestly say that i feel i am a above average stick, and can follow very precise instructions, under scrutiny of others, under high pressure situations. and thirdly, ive been living on the road for 2 years now, really flexible and adaptable, and have demonstrated i can get along with guys in close quarters for months on end.

so when I throw in a resume I'm not doing it blindly or cluelessly like OMG HIRE ME I HAZ LICENZE!!!

if someone did give me a shot, even with lower than 'required mins', I feel that for some operations I would indeed be a valuable candidate.

but yeah, all that stuff doesnt seem to matter much. aviation is not a meritocracy.

That may be true, but at the end of the day, the mins were set at 1500 for what ever reason so all 1200 hours of you doing spinds around the country are pretty much useless to the employer.
