Human Oversight METARS vs. ASOS/AWOS

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with what exactly is involved in over seeing a METAR station? From my understanding the only difference between ASOS/AWOS and a human oversight was the ability of the station to report clouds above 12,000 feet. Why is this so? Just curious, students have asked me and didn't really have an answer.

Not sure the actual answer, but my guess is humans can fill in when the technology fails. Other than that, because...@surreal1221 or whatever your name is! He should have an answer for you.
