How many new students are starting ATP?

I used to instruct at ATP and went on to a Regional a few months back, I was curious if ATP has had a decline in new students based on the lack of hiring by the regionals and uncertainty in the industry. Also if anyone knows if the instructor pool there has maxed out due to instructors not leaving for an airline.

From what I understand, they have new instructor standardization classes starting each week for the next few weeks, so as of now, they are still hiring. With all the cuts at the airlines though I would guess that hiring will slow in the future.

I talked to an instructor at KRAL the other night and he said its packed there. Then again, that is the best location.

With the pitch that ATP is giving, there are a lot of new students coming in for the PP class every 2 weeks. They are also mentioning that all of the people who take the RJ course are getting hired by the airlines. Im not too sure I believe that.

They are probably getting hired into a hiring pool.

Just look at ATPs website at how many people where hired at Expressjet since December, not one of those peoples has a class date. Look at the people hired in the last 2 months at Eagle, not one of those peoples has a class date.

Most of the airlines on ATPs website are not even hiring at this time, or are hiring into a very large pool.

Yea i saw all the people who went to Eagle and feel bad since they stopped all new hire training, are shifting some of their ATR's back to DFW, will be phasing out their 135's at the end of the summer... I hope the people who are going through trainnig now are looking forward to and love instructing because it seems they will be doing it for a long time before the industry starts hiring on a regular basis again. Like I said before i'm really happy I got my job when I did and just hope my company stays healthy through these hard times....

I am starting ATP on June 30th WITH the understanding of how the industry is today. I know I am going to have to instruct for quite a while before I get the job I want. I don't look at this as such a bad thing, sure the money will suck but in the long run, being a CFI will make me a much better pilot. It will also give me more time to decide which career path I want to take. It's the airline industry way, your career path will take many turns...

The no kidding truth Michael.

When I left as a CFI I averaged 140 pay hours per month X $25 = 3500 or 1750 every two week check.

As a regional first year FO..I wont even do the math.

I hope that wasn't a jab at me.

I posted because I wanted to make sure that one of the posters understood that being a CFI is not as low on the income totem pole as it once was.

I don't want to put words in surreal's mouth but I think he was referring to ATP still posting people as "hired" who are sitting in hiring pools which could realistically be months or longer before they actually start.

Thanks Clocks.

I've seen people on that hired page that were thrown out of ATP before program completion. A lot of my class mates that are on that hired page are in training right now, not in a waiting pool, I think one of them was never placed on that hired page...
Some regionals are still hiring btw...

No, it wasn't.

Correcto Mondo.

Pinnacle, Mesa and Comair I believe are the only airlines currently running classes every month.

Other airlines have pools with classes being dangled in front of poolies faces like carrots on a stick. But lets be realistic, this industry is not going to be climbing back into the "good ole days" in the foreseeable future.

Well, I have an interview with an airline with a class date you did not mention.
Look at it this way.. There is no shortage of fuel, the fuel price hikes are man made. The added costs of fuel are passed onto the passengers. The airplanes are ALL very full. People are having problems jump seating. So as long as there is fuel, and as long as their are passengers who are willing to pay for the fuel, theres no reason to be worried that everyone is going to stop flying, pilots will be needed.
Airlines threatening to lay off pilots has just as much to do with collective bargaining contract debates as it does with higher prices of fuel. What ever excuse that can be used to make pilots feel like their job is in danger.
Think about it... If the price of fuel keeps going up, people are going to be more willing to travel by airplane than car... I bought tickets on Jet Blue to SYR from FLL, 250$ round trip. I couldn't drive there for that cheap, and the speed to get there by airplane vs car, it's a no brainer. Things are better than you think.

Actually, you are going to find that at most busy flight schools (FBO or academy), you are going to be making more than a first or second year first officer.

Michael

Michael,

I am starting training soon and once I am done I will try to hold you to your word about this statement :)
