Interesting factoid about the grey and blue. Stephen Wolf, the CEO of UAL at the time felt that the white paint did not invoke a professional enough image for the airline as United at the time was aggressively pursuing the professional/business traveler, corporate accounts etc so the gray and blue paint was introduced. We all thought it sucked and for us in MX we noted another thing that no one else seemed to, with the dark colors the airframe was going to become a giant heatsink and APU usage would sky rocket in order to keep the plane cool and it did. Remember, this was the 90's and PC air at the gate was rarely used and where I used to work most of the units didn't work anyway. It was comical. A lot MORE money was spent on fuel for the increased APU usage and repairing/installing newer, more efficient PC air units throughout the system and to keep the thread on track 2.5 years as a pilot, second airline and not qualified to move on.Yeah, that one was a sweet spot. I didn't like the 90's gray livery. But I thought that the last true UA colors were a worthy successor to the classic 80's livery.
