How do you like Skywest?!

You guys that fly for Skywest...How do you like it? If you could fill me in on some of the good / bad points that you experience everyday I would be very appreciative. Also, are you happy there?

I am currently trying to decide whether I want to go to an airline or stay where I am.

I'm still in groundschool, but so far I love it. The people are great. Upper management take time out of their busy schedules to come and talk to the new hires. People enjoy working here, I don't hear any complaining. The domiciles are in good locations. The downside is that you don't get paid during training.

Skywest is a great company! I've been here a little over five years now and still love going to work! We're expanding quite a bit so there is lots of movement. This expansion actually began 3-4 years ago. At that time we had less than 20 RJs, now we've got over 100 of them.

Depending on where you are based and what aircraft you're flying you could do anywhere from locals to 4-day trips. On the RJs, I'd say it's 60% 4-days with a mix of others in there for the rest. I'm in the top third of the seniority list where I'm based and can pretty much hold locals or back-to-back 2-day trips. My average pay values are up in the high 80s with some months going up over 90 hours. There is plenty of extra time to pick up for overtime pay (last week I picked up a quick LAX round-trip that paid 4.5 hours of overtime).

The goods:
-Great equipment. Our maintenance department is top-notch. They keep the airplanes running like they should.
-Great crews. Just about everyone I fly with are very happy to be here and make the most out of their jobs. We get up in the air and talk about family, friends, etc. instead of b*tching about the company.
-Great schedules. Not too many regional airlines where you can literally go coast to coast in one trip. While it's hard to get 100% good, consistent trips, our planners do try to make them good (Delta and United change our schedules- that has a big affect on us).
-Great training dept. Their goal is to see you pass, not wash you out.
-Great management. Open communication. They try to tell us what's going on and keep everyone in the loop.
-Plenty of movement. I just looked at the seniority list. The most junior captain in the Brasilia was hired 8/11/2003 and on the RJ was hired 8/1/2001.

The bad:
-First year pay! Ugh! No pay during training (you are provided a hotel room). This is something that would be a show-stopper for someone with an established family. I was fortunate enough to get hired early on in my marriage and didn't have kids so my wife was able to work. Do a search on regional pay and you'll see what I got paid my first couple years here. We're due to get a raise this year, but not sure how much. It's a competetive world with other regionals all trying to get United and Delta's flying. That trickles down to us...
-This "bad" goes with any airline you work for. Seniority is everything and you start out at the bottom. That means sitting on reserve for possibly a couple months; you'll most likely be working weekends and holidays. Your schedule won't be awarded until the 17th of the month prior. Vacation (outside the master bid) right now at Skywest is pretty hard to get because we're short pilots.

All-in-all, Skywest is a great company with some good potential. We'll never get major airline pay unless we start flying something with more than 100 seats. We are at the mercy of United and Delta whose futures are uncertain.

Hope this helps your decision...

Hey CAVOK,

If ya don't mind me asking, how much longer (to the best of your prediction ability) till you upgrade to Captain in the Learjet?

Lets see....I think it will be awhile. Right now we are hiring capts off the street rather than upgrading current F/Os. Maybe none of us are qualified yet. For me upgrade time would proabably be 3-5 years right now, my money would be closer to the 5 year mark.

You must be very low time then. Even so, it shouldn't be longer than a couple years, especially in charter. Most "busy" charter pilots fly about 500-700 hours per year. So, it "should" only be a couple years at the most, but I don't know your particular situation.

Yeah, you're right. I am pretty low time compared to the rest of the guys flying for us. I was hired three months ago, and have logged around 170 hours, and business should pick up come spring time. Right now I am on track to fly over 600 hours this year.
I'm not sure what the insurance for the company requires for captains, but I'm sure it is relatively high due to the fact that we can bring on SICs with low time. I'm not privy to the information to know the details of that stuff, but upgrade time seems to be a long way off.
But my decision to go to a regional is hinged on the fact that I will have a schedule...maybe not a great one, but at least I can plan things. So the money, upgrade time, location, equipment, etc.. are all things I am considering, but the "on call" status 24/7 is really wearing on me here.

Ditto what Chris said.

I've lately been trying to pick up trips for overtime and its not that bad. I can pick up a day trip from any base in our system or you can pick up trips from major airports like LAX. Next week I'm picking up a trip that starts at 8am and off at 6pm. It will pay 7:53 hours credit of overtime pay( 1.5 * hourly rate). It's not that great at first year pay which would be about 28/hr but it should be good at second year pay. Lately I've been contemplating on whether to transition to the JET as an FO. We'll have to see. So far the company has been everything I had hoped for and more.

I have already moved up to #17 out of 27 in Palm Springs. By Spring I will probably be able to hold something with weekends off.

I am on my second week into training for the EMB-120 FO.
So far... this company has exceeded my expectations. The people that work here are really nice. Have not heard any complaining or disclaimers from anyone around here. From the Senior Captains, Managment, and instructors, other guys transitioning, and/or upgrading, they all seem happy, and getting along quite well.

It is a very relaxing enviroment. The CEO stops by once in a while, and opened himself to be asked questions from all of us. He was very open in answering all our concerns on the current airline industry status and the company's position during these hard times. Very nice people, good company morale.

Back to the books!! Yeah!!

Heh Heh Heh... I just have to chuckle at this because there's a similar thread over on flightinfo... The few disgruntled Skywest guys seem to frequent there (as well as us happy-to-be-heres)... I got a little tired of hearing the griping, so here's what I posted:

Yeah, life sure sucks! I hate getting my paychecks every two weeks- it's a shame that I can pay the mortgage, my car payment, groceries, insurance, school bills, even enough to sock away for retirement and the kids' college funds...maybe my wife should go to work and let daycare raise the kids. I hate going to work every week with the same happy-go-lucky crews that just want to laugh and have a good time at work- we need more crews that complain about how they have to get up early or go to work four days a week! Sheesh, I don't even like getting home every other night! I hate flying equipment that's well maintained. I sure wish I our mechanics did the minimal amount of work on our airplanes- we ought to be just keeping them together with yellow MEL stickers! I should have followed my buddy years ago to Northwest- today we could be recounting the olden days while the boxes are loaded in our purple-tailed Caravans. Yep- this job sucks. With that whole "open line of communication" thing management has- they need to disconnect their phones and hold their meetings somewhere where none of us can see them. Their interaction with the pilot group just lowers them to our level! We can't have VP's fraternizing with the work force! I need to become a pessimist- that way my tainted views can not only affect my professional life, but my presonal life... maybe then I can join the masses of divorced pilots- will life be good then??
[end sarcasm...]

Omar,
I hear there are people upgrading in the EMB with less than 2 years at SkyWest. If you transition to the RJ you might miss an earlier upgrade because you'd be seatlocked. Life should be getting really good for you soon. There are a lot of EMB FO's that are coming out of seatlock and want to go to the RJ. That should bump you up quite a bit in seniority. Are you starting to feel comfortable flying the line?

Viper's right. Omar, you were hired about three months into a big EMB hiring pool. Those seat locks are coming up and there will be a mass exodus to the RJ this spring. Check the standing bids online and see how many PSP FOs are transitioning ahead of you.... most junior EMB captain on the list now was hired 8/03 (of course, he's in IAH!).

So... weigh your options. The seniority may be better on the EMB, but the pay is better on the RJ... you can still live at home in the EMB, but more likely you'll have to move or commute somewhere far far away in the RJ... you got som' tinking to do...

Which is exactly why I'm holding out for a SkyWest interview early spring instead of going elsewhere. All those RJ transitioners translate to big hiring into the Bro.

Why is everyone so eager to move over to the RJ, wouldn't it be better to take the quick upgrade in the EMB?
