Hot fuel.

I hot fueled Burbank PD and CHP during the riots, Glendale PD had Hughes 300s. I was young and dumb but not that dumb.

Big big difference between being a fueler, fueling a jet/jet a helicopter with crew, and actually getting out of a twin piston with no one inside, trusting a flimsy 40+ year old parking brake, walking around two spinning props with volatile avgas/vapor all around you next to a giant tank of gas/pump. Ridiculous. Not to mention how stupid fueling the nacelle tanks would be.

Agree that with the proper crew/training its standard.

But damn, what an idiot.

My rule is "if I got ramp checked right now...what would the FAA say"

My initial post was from my phone earlier today. I have hot fueled aircraft before. But there is a fire guard, someone at the controls and someone pumping the gas. Today's occurrence was just really strange. No one seemed to care. But it really struck me as odd and this could turn ugly real quick.

Your initial feelings were spot on, in my opinion.

I dunno......I have hot pitted/hot fueled a billion times in my career, and never once has it ever been anything more routine and I have never heard a story from the last 30 years of it being otherwise (yeah apparently an A-6 blew up in the Cherry Point hot pits back in the day after a broken smash light set it off, so the story goes). BUT.....100LL? That is a little more volatile than JP/kerosene/Jet-A if I remember correctly. Not sure if I would do it, especially without someone in the airplane.....I have never hot fueled without being in the jet, or having the outgoing pilot in there. Actually, that sounds crazy without a pilot at the controls, but not as much from a fire standpoint as just making sure it doesn't just start chopping things/people up around the airport if it gets loose :)

No one in the plane with engines running? Are you kidding me? I would tell them to F off. From a previous line service standpoint.

Dudes used to fuel running helicopters in the Army by themselves by just cranking on a bunch of control friction and getting out real careful..... Nothing terrifying about that at all. I cant imagine why we wouldnt do that anymore without somebody being on the controls.....

Not gonna lie.... Saw the title... Thought of this

That's not real.

Unless you're tactical, there is no percentage in it. A 340? Nuts. Bump a throttle getting in or out, and it could get interesting quick.

I wouldn't really have a problem fueling with the motors running. What i would have a problem with is the only crew member being outside the cockpit with the engines running. That instantly brings images of the FAA safety video they made us watch in college of the guy who tried to hand prop his airplane. The thing kicked over with him outside and ran away from him. He hung on for a while, until the spinning airplane get way too out of control, through him around a bit and caused some serious property damage.

Sometimes, they become airborne too....

Would I feel safe doing it? you bet. If you ever worked in the construction and oil companies, we done much worse.

Would I actually do it? probably not... as some SJS kid may see me and report me on Jetcareers (and its prohibited in our GOM).
Just so that this "SJS kid" is abundantly clear, is the reason that you wouldn't do it that someone might see you, or that it is prohibited in your Operations Manual?
