But would pull a Cessna 340 up to the gas pump leave both engines running while you pump 100LL with no one in the plane at the controls?

Would I feel safe doing it? you bet. If you ever worked in the construction and oil companies, we done much worse.

Would I actually do it? probably not... as some SJS kid may see me and report me on Jetcareers (and its prohibited in our GOM).

I've been tempted to leave the engine running while hopping out to kick the chocks out of the way, never done it though.

OTOH, if someone qualified is sitting on the brakes and everyone else knows what they are doing, Hot fueling, loading, unloading, ect can be done safely.

I agree with @USMCmech . It takes at least two people to have an acceptable level of safety to refuel the aircraft.

In CA the law says you must turn off your car when refueling.

I used to hot fuel helicopters, but wouldn't do it on a 340.

We had to Hot Fuel CRJ's sometimes if a station didn't have a ground power unit or huffer available. But we had chokes in, parking brake set, and a person permanently stand by the fuel truck.

I wouldn't really have a problem fueling with the motors running. What i would have a problem with is the only crew member being outside the cockpit with the engines running. That instantly brings images of the FAA safety video they made us watch in college of the guy who tried to hand prop his airplane. The thing kicked over with him outside and ran away from him. He hung on for a while, until the spinning airplane get way too out of control, through him around a bit and caused some serious property damage.

Negative. The quote was "I doubt any automobile law pertains to aviation." Well, NJ law prohibits self serve fuel at the airport and automotive fuel stations.
