Horizon's minimum age is 18!!!

Just curious, I've looked around for it for it in the FAR's, but I can't find where it says this

Are you referring to the minimum age of 23 years old?
If so, it is found in FAR 61.153

"Sec. 61.153 Eligibility requirements: General.

To be eligible for an airline transport pilot certificate, a person must:
(a) Be at least 23 years of age"

If they're not mature enough they won't get through the interview. Besides, any kid with 1000 hours (and 100 multi) is going to be mature other wise they would've killed themselves by then.

Alex.
but the real question is -> can you get your PPL at 16 (requirement right? 16 minimum?)... and actually gain your full hiring hours by the age of 18??

16 to solo, and 17 to get the private pilot's license, and your commercial at 18 (man, those would be some hectic birthdays!)

And to answer your questions. You'd have to fly almost 3 hours a day just to reach the 1,000 hr min which a lot of companies have. Plus when your 17 you also have federal mandated schooling (high school) to attend, some sort of a social life to prevent you from dieing, you need to eat to survive, you need sleep to function. and bam! You just ran out of hours in a day. BTW, don't forget to factor in no time flying due to WX or MX, plus you'll have gained very little experience I think....

Especially since you can't get a comm. certificate until you're 18... that would cost a lot of money!!!

Well i wouldnt say 18 is too far off from 21 or 22. I've seen military pilots at age 22, and they certainly can handle the job, seeing how they've made it there.

However, i heard from a friend, that someone at Xjet was hired at 18 with about 600 hours when they were hiring with low mins. Dont know the accuracy of it, however.

Yeah, and my friend's girlfriend's best friend's second cousin knew this dude who had his kidney removed after an all night bender with a hot chick who turned out to be a man!:sarcasm:

Haha

Yes, im aware of the possible inaccuracy with the statement, but just leaving the possibility open, and not discrediting my friend.

Maybe my post was unclear... I was saying that it would cost a lot of money to build 1000 hours before you were 18 (since you can't get a job flying).

My flight partner, when I went through ATP, ended up getting hired at ExpressJet at 18.

He worked on flying while in highschool and then spent a few months after HS graduation building time and working. Then in September, started ATP with 100 hours plus, did his training and was a CFI/CFII/MEI by January, hired at ATP a few weeks after that, then hired by ExpressJet by June at a little over 500hrs TT.

Probably the most mature 18 year old on the planet, and just had a knack for flying.

Yes it is possible, but I have never met another 18 year old that was like him.

Did you ever ask or did he ever tell why? I am 18 and would love to fly the airlines. However, I also want to enjoy this part of my life. I do not want to discredit what this, obviously, talented young adult did, but, to me at least, it seems like a better choice to go to college and enjoy what life I have left before I must work to stay alive.

Yeah, we talked about it alot. He planned on getting an online degree while instructing but ExpressJet took him before he went to college.

Personally, I wouldn't give up my college years for anything. Wouldn't even trade it for a job flying 747s or the space shuttle. Online degrees and being a 30 year old freshman in college just ain't the same. Living in a dorm and getting the entire college experience is something you can't simulate online.

Ain't no way I'd trade my four years in college for forty flying a 744. Ha, worked the number four into there a lot, eh?:)

You should meet some of the FOs who sit next to me. One can easily get a thousand hours and be as mature as a 5-year old.

I would not trade my 5 years of college for anything. Best time of my life. Without it, I couldn't come here and say that I know Doug.

Took me six years total. 2 years at Carolina taking random classes, then moved to Colorado and took a year off to get in-state tuition then three more years to decide what degree I wanted and then finish it.

The bonus was that in the year that I took off from school to get residency I got to live with cheerleaders and hit the slopes about 50 times in one season.
