Horizon Air Dispatch

Hello all,

First time post, go easy. Thanks for all the advise so far. I've lurked here for a while, especially the Dispatch FAQ section. My question is regarding Horizon Air Dispatch positions. Based on what I've found so far, they employ slightly under 20, and the turnover is quite low.

The advise in the FAQ directed at dispatchers with a green certificate is basically move to where the job is or commute. End of story.

Having said that, what would be the prospect of a well presented "green" dispatcher getting on at Horizon? Throw in a 4 year science degree, a pilots license, and oh yeah, I'm 45. I currently do not have the certificate.

As a follow up, nearest commute from Portland, OR to another regional would be SFO, or PHX?

I realize I am breaking the cardinal rule of "follow the job", but wanted to get a general picture of Horizon's hiring picture.

Thanks again!

Hey, and welcome!

I don't work there, but it seems like they are good for at least one class a year, at least they have been for the past couple of years. They are getting new E175's but I don't know if that is to replace their Q's or in addition to them.

Closest regional to PDX would be in PHX with Mesa. Skywest might be a little closer, geographically in St. George Utah, but the commute would probably be pretty difficult as there aren't that many flights in and out of St. George to major cities.

Good luck!

No regional in SFO so not sure where you got that info from, but I get the spirit of your post.

I originally got my license with the goal of getting into Alaska Dispatch or American. Born and raised in WA state and most family being located there, that was the goal. On my other side of the family was two generations of pilots for American. Thats why they were on my list too.

I applied once to Alaska and never even got a response back. With 4 years of college and almost 3 years of dispatch experience at that point.

I have seen American post one time in 4 years, and that was while I was taking a stab at ATC so I didn't apply, not to mention that was with their horrible contract which was basically a minor step above regional pay at the time.

Long story short, if you have one place in mind where you want to work in this field, then you are in it for the wrong reasons. You may get lucky as I have seen some people get, but I've also seen people pass over other airlines they didn't want, and they are still making pennies at their regional.

I'm in my mid twenties so odds are I would've gotten into one of those places at some point, but I eventually expanded my list and have not looked back.

Do some more research on where Airline HQ's are at, and if your list still stands only at Horizon / Alaska, my advice (and note this is only my opinion) I would consider something else.

If your mom and dad are currently dispatching at Horizon....then Im sure you have at least a 50% chance. Otherwise.....keep on truckin.....

oh and you did write that you currently dont have a dx cert.? Hmmmm.....not sure what to think of this. :)

As others have done on this forum, I was seeking observations people have made regarding hiring for a certain airline. Your reply suggests new hires are rare in this case.

No, I currently do not have a DX certificate. I am evaluating whether this would be a viable career change and am in information gathering mode. All three responses so far have been very informative. Thanks!

Ignore the donkies on here, they all have fragile egos.

100LL the chances of getting to work at horizon as a newbie are pretty slim, they just hired 2 new dispatchers few month ago and they were both with experience from other airlines. when the position opened up they has a lot of experienced applicants. They are getting 33 new E175's in the next 3 years. But SOC director told me that they wont need new dispatchers for at least a year.
