Hiring tracking (opposite of furlough tracking)

Were you able to follow up with your contact and tell him your side of the story?

Yes but there wasn't anything he could do about it. There is a small chance they may invite me back to try again at some point in time, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm hoping that somebody (when I'm old and gray sitting in the left seat of a 777 somewhere) I can look back on the whole experience and laugh about how I "walked out" of a 121 interview.

I don't blame you for your path, I would have done the same. Can I ask though, after the Airtran furlough, were you ever called back? If so, when? And did you defer it and still have rights? That's why I'm hesitant to jump VX. You just don't know where that carrier will end up. Lets be honest, no one in the world could ever have predicted that ValuJet would be Southwest one day. Not to slam ValuJet or its pilots, but those who stuck around there have struck gold today. You just can't tell how it will turn out, but isn't the story everywhere?

Yes, I was called back to AirTran in February 1999, right after I started at US Airways. At the time AirTran had a ragtag fleet of old British Midland and Turkish Air DC9s, the callsign was still "Critter", and most of my manuals had a hodgepodge of "Eastern" and "Valujet" headers. So -- even I the greatest Monday morning quarterback in aviation history -- realize that it made sense to stay at USAir rather than go back to AirTran. (though I admit that stings a bit now especially in light of the fact that I was turned down by SWA a few years ago)

I don't blame you for being hesitant. The airline industry is unbelievably fluid and changes on a dime. If I had known that US Airways would likely merge with American (which despite any seniority headaches that occur will still result in almost guaranteed job security) I would have been back in a NY second. <shrug> I had good reasons for all of my decisions to change companies... but that doesn't mean they were all good decisions.

I just got a recall letter from Mesa Airlines today. :bounce: Hmm.... Do I want to go back to making only 20 grand a year??? Hard choice!! ;)

Apparently they're recalling all furloughs. It will be interesting to see what percentage takes the recall.

Yeah I just saw that they were recalling furloughs. I wonder if they'll even plan to hire, not that I want to go there or anything.

The letter says there are 80 FO slots, and if I recall there are something like 181 furloughees. Expecting a 50% recall rate would be exceedingly optimistic, so I think they'll probably have to hire.

I wonder if they are going to keep the Go! flying to compete with Island Air and Hawaiians new Ohana airline.

Apparently skywest is done hiring until at least summer. They are about 300 pilots fat.

As far as TPIC goes, I've got more than you can shake a stick at and I can't get a call from a non-regional 121 for love or money. I could whine about this or I could accept that the game always changes. Right now, it seems like if you want to fly a shiny airliner for a pile of cash, you'd do well to go fly a shiny airliner for peanuts first. Course by the time you do, the goal posts will probably have changed position again...nature of the game! Take it as it comes and be glad you're not digging ditches.

You could probably fly a 747 so steady that the senior FA could bulls-eye womp rats out the L2 door, but that won't help you when the mindset of Legacy/Major 121 HR departments right now is that having some prior Unwashed Masses customer service skills is a requirement as well.

Heh, well you know I AM the greatest pilot ever to suck down air, but I'm also wise beyond my years. Just ask me. My general feeling is that it's futile to get wrapped around the axle about hiring mins, decisions, preferences, etc. Chucking my toys out of the pram isn't going to change anything, but it will defintely harsh the buzz me and old Austin Nichols are working on. Now, with that said, yes, obviously I would have landed that Sioux City DC-10 and made the first turnoff, but while you all know that, hiring managers don't read JC. Oh, God, I hope not anyway. ;)
