I think that people who say that are generally people who failed the ride. 70% of applicants for the CFI pass with the FSDO or DPEs.

I don't put much weight in a failed ride as everyone else has said, but I also would own up to it if I needed to retest for a failure.

I think that the people that say this are the people who want to feel better about themselves by putting others down.
5 applicants went to the Chicago FSDO.
All 5 busted on the first try.
2 busted on the second try. (I was one of the two yet we were the only ones who completed the -II final stage check on the first try.)
It's all luck when you get assigned Fed's. I got a great Fed on my second retest. Totally fair and I actually learned a thing or two from him. The first one I can't say the same about.
I definitely do not deserve to fly a airliner. Change in class endorsements & ground ref are just so critical in everyday 121 flying.

A few of our best are young low time ones here at Mesaba. Most of our best, the overwhelming majority, are senior guys/gals and guys/gals with high time. Low time and good attitude and skill can happen, it's just far and few. Makes those few shine all the more though.
I am completely in favor of raising the mins. I wish there were some way to sweep a magic wand and up pay too.

Those 5 applicants you mention are still part of those statistics. Perhaps they didn't get the training the FSDO was looking for?

Sure I did. The ride started at 8 am and I finished at 8pm. My point is the statistics don't lie.
70% of CFI applicants pass on the first try. That's it - end of story.
I still stand by what I said, that those who claim the FSDO is out to get you are the ones who have most likely failed, needing to rationalize a failure.
You could lump it in projection or denial of reality, but the facts are the facts. Stating a FSDO is out to get you is objective. The statistics are not.
Arre you arguing for the sake of arguing? Let it go - I have my opinion and you have yours; and, I don't even know what your point is.
All I was doing was correcting a point made, which I backed up with hard numbers. When did this become about me?

One of the worst pilots I have ever taught went all the way through MEI CFII without ever failing a checkride. Took two months longer than the rest of his class at ATP, and was constantly on the verge of being "asked to leave". Then goes around and brags how good he is cause he never failed a ride, Then we sat him down and gave him the tounge lashing that we all had wanted to do for months, lastly telling him how when he kills himself we hope nobody else is with him.

When the arrogance was seeping out on that last post. Fantastic you passed on the first try, I applaud you for that, it's a great accomplishment. However, you are very wrong and very naive if you really think that there are not quite a few Fed's out there to get ya.

It depends on your region.... Taking a CFI ride in Utah is alot harder then taking one in vegas with Santas giving out presents.... One of my old cheif instructors had the current statistics for utah and it was around 70% failed... I used to flight instruct in vegas and all 15 student cfi's passed on the first try....I wouldnt trust half of them to fly in any 121 operation.

Well, I passed first time (there is a report from 3 years ago in the checkride forum), and while you are right, the majority of people do pass, I am very familiar with some rougue examiners here at the local FSDO. We just had a CFII applicant fail because his stalls under the hood weren't "to standards." Funny, considering it isn't even in the PTS. I would say out of the 8 or so examiners at our local one, 6 are good. I have seen some well qualified applicants get the wrong examiner and get busted down.

I go for extended interview process. I know someone who starts with a short, face to face interview, then does a day long "just hang out" interview then they have the pilot do some trips with them part time for a while.
