Help needed in getting a good CFI job.

Hello everyone,

I am posting here to see if anyone has any leads in obtaining a CFI position that would get me a permanent residency (greencard) in the U.S. I've been in here for 10 years legally under various student VISAs; I completed my high school, college, and flight training. I am at the point where vocational/student VISAs do not do much good and am looking for a company that is willing to hire me as a flight instructor/pilot and file a green card application for me.

The filing cannot be done unless I have a job offer; this way of getting a permanent residency is called EB-3 cateogry filing. This process requires a total of 6 different forms (2 for the department of labor and 4 for the department of homeland security) and will cost exactly $1485 ($475 for I-140, $1010 for I-485, the rest is free) to file them. I know exactly what needs to be filed when and to where. I have talked to companies after another, but most companies do not want anything to do with "foreign(ers)" and "paperwork". I am looking for a group of good people, a company to help me out where I can also help their flight instruction and/or flight operation.

If you know of a company or someone who may be willing to do this, I would appreciate any suggestions. I am willing to relocate and commit for the company that can do such thing for me. My resume is available upon request-- please message me for my resume. I would appreciate any help.

I won't say it can't be done, but there is a bit more to do than what your talking about.

The largest hurdle is getting the Department of Labor to declare that there is a shortage of flight instructors or pilots. H-1 visas need to have a ruling of a shortage among other things.

I just don't think you're going to see that in aviation for a while, if ever.

I agree with the difficulties involved in getting the Foreign Labor Certification... EB-3 is a different designation than H-1b VISA, but they both require the same kind of Foreign Labor Certification (different forms). I'm wondering if there is a company that is willing to go through this with me.

Honestly, I just don't know how you could pull off the labor certification. Unless maybe, they came up with a requirement for a CFI that had to speak Japanese . :dunno: Outside of that, there just isn't a shortage of CFIs out there.

I'm going to talk to my current flight school to see if they come come up with something for the foreign labor certificate. I've definitely got a major disadvantage over other flight instructors unless otherwise I utilize some of my other skills...

Any other suggestions and comments are also appreciated.

The way you are addressing your needs is quite impressive. You are articulate, precise and clearly organized. It might take a bit of effort but I'm sure you will find a flight school that is willing to help you out. If I was in such a position to help you out I'd certainly look into it.

Situations like this makes me really hate our immigration process. Seems my family was able to stroll right into this country but not any more. I don't get it.

Best of luck in your pursuit!

Long time ago, there was a job posting on this website for a Japanese speaking King Air SIC + CFI position with 500HRS min. I applied and contacted this company. The company, however, ended up not wanting to deal with VISA or greencard.

Another thing I am thinking about is that I could perhaps go to a good flight school to get my MEI; perhaps the company would consider hiring me...

Or get marry

I offered a plane ride to this one girl I used to have a crush on; she kindly rejected me by saying "I'm afraid of heights, so I'm not going." This is my personal opinion, but girls here don't like shorter guys.

Perhaps it's time for me to look for a girlfriend rather than a job? I've never had a date, but personally, I think I enjoy spending an hour in an airplane than an hour dating a girl.

What never had a date!? I think you would change your mind after spending an hour in a girl over an hour in a plane. :laff:

This message has been very encouraging. Going through a foreign labor certification is certainly not an easy task. I feel, however, that all selfish business operations will be "screened" here automatically. The selfish business operations I described here wouldn't be interested in helping others (employees , customers, etc.) while they would be interested in grabbing things away from others. I think some describe this type of business as a rip-off and/or professional jerks. Unfortunately, with only little experience I've had, I've already seen many of this kind in aviation...

There are two things I am hoping that this job search would find:
1) Pleasant people to have an employer and employee relationship with
2) Good airplane with good maintenance to give instructions in

Most importantly, I'm hoping to work for those business owners and managers that are capable of answering "what would I do if I were in his shoes?" and those who realize that they would probably do the same if they were in exactly the same situation.

You young guys kill me, AN HOUR? REALLY? wait til you get old and 45 minutes includes dinner, foreplay, sex and the obligitory cuddling.

Get your MEI somewhere that's willing to do the paperwork you need. Please go get yourself some girly action. Start fat and work your way to slimmer as you get your mojo. As a short Asian guy making very little money you got to set the bar low and raise it a little at a time.

Finding such flight school has been a difficult task. When they hear that I want to just get my MEI, they already know that I want to get hired. Any specific suggestion in flight schools?

The problem is,,, both slim girls and fat girls only like tall guys...

How short are you? Also, have you looked into the larger academy type schools that handle a lot of international students? Maybe they'd be more willing to hire on someone who speaks the native language for a large base of their students?

You mean how tall I am? I'm little less than 5ft5 but taller than 5ft4. Most girls here are way BIGGER than I am.

I've contacted places like IFTA, IASCO; as of now, all I have heard is that they're not hiring...

It is true women perfer taller guys but more importantly they look for confidence. The japanese culture seems to be pretty quiet and reserved, not really something that makes american women swoon. One good night in Vegas will land you a wife.

Is there no market for flight instruction in Japan, cargo, ect?

There is almost no General Aviation in Japan... You can actually count the number of privately owned jets there; it's something like 6. People can rent airplanes at limited locations: BE58 goes for $1300 an hour dry, Piper Arrow goes for $600 an hour dry at a flight school funded by Toyota. FAA certificates are not recognized by their aviation authority called JCAB except for the Private Pilot certificate; the commercial mel; ir certificate "conversion" training costs about $100k.

American women... It's not like I've never approached them. Whenever I approach them, I get rejected like I have a wrong approach frequency tuned in. I also know that they're missing out... They could have travelled with me to Japan; they could have learned a new language; they could have met people from a different part of the world much more closely. I hate to generalize, but I don't think their ideals and values are that sophisticated.

Not all, but for the vast majority you hit the nail on the head.

Also, the fact that Japan has zero GA is pretty scary to me. Not in a cultural judging kinda way..just that I can't imagine..

A pilot from United Airlines (flew 747) couldn't believe the fact that Japan has almost no general aviation... I explained to him why, and he discovered it that way.
