Help! My parents won't let me go to my dream college!

then simply go to a state school with an aviation program and get a major in aviation management with a minor in business or the reciprocal if possible your bank account will thank you later

A Captain I recently flew with went to this school, had good things to say about it. Don't know much else about it, but looks like they do have some aviation programs. The price isn't bad if you are a NJ resident.

I believe he took classes online, don't know if that's an option for you or not.

After community college in NJ, I narrowed down the choices to 2 4-year colleges. Dowling College in Long Island and ERAU in Daytona Beach. The problem is that my parents won't let me go to ERAU because it's too far away and they think I'm not ready to live on my own yet. I love ERAU becuase everyone over there loves aviation. Plus, I'm planning to start a flight simulator club or some kind of aviation club over there and I think I will have a better chance of starting that club at a place where everyone loves aviation.

It's not that I want to go to ERAU only I just don't want my parents to rule out ERAU.

What should I do?

I hated going to an aviation college(I left). You think it's going to be cool to hang around with fellow aviation "nerds"? Wait a few months. If you are actually going to ERAU NOT TO BE A PILOT, ie a rocket scientist or business major then I would go 100%. If you are trying to be a pilot, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY THERE. Get your ratings cheap and get a degree at a different college on a different subject. Trust US, we've been there.

So long as you're 18 and not living under their roof, your parents don't have to "let you" do anything. It's called being an adult now. That said, they do have the authority to support your decision financially, or not. Yes, listen to their advice, but I the end it's your choice to make. Just realize you now bear ultimate responsibility for the consequences of your choices, good or bad. Life is all about choices! Good luck!

Well, one of the reasons I want to go to ERAU is because its business major is focused on aviation. I don't know what I want to do in aviation but I might want to focus on the business side of aviation.

Then go to a well respected business school in your area, NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Syracuse or TCNJ. Apply for an internship at an airline or fractional like NetJets in the summer and get your aviation experience.

The community college I'm going to this fall is County College of Morris. My major is aviation flight technology but I'm not taking the flying portion of it. I'm only taking ground school classes. I'm also taking some business courses. So it's a combination of aviation and business.

I think I heard that Mercer County Community College has a aviation program but I think they also have aviation management as well. Is MCCC's aviation program is any better than CCM? How does MCCC compare to CCM?

You parents are doing you a huge favor. ERAU is way too expensive for what you get. A business degree from ERAU is no more valuable than one from NJ state U.

IF ERAU is that important to you, then work after school, save up your money, and pay for it yourself.

Kid. You're not listening. Can't you hear the overwhelming consensus here? Did you come for advise or validation...?

Just keep in mind if you go to Dowling you're going to have to buy a pilot uniform and FO epaulets; I hope you're okay with that.

I'll just observe that the last few days have been (depending on your disposition) either the most hysterically funny or the most pathetically sad I've seen yet. I think it's safe to say that the target audience is being reached...now can they be educated?

I mean honestly, you couldn't write this stuff, people would think it was too obvious. :D

Hell, I was heart set on going to NAU and got the official "your in" letter. Suddenly my parents realized it was going to cost them too much money so they "forced" me to go instate until I got my own cash or loans to transfer. I ended up loving my in state choice and stuck around. As the Rolling Stones so elegantly put it "You cant always get what you want, but yah get what you need"

If you are going business/mgmt route ERAU is NOT the place to go. The only reason they offer that track is to give students something to do who get lured to the school and don't have enough money to fly or already have their flying and just want to get their 4 yr ticket punch. If you go into the business side you will be severely handicapped next to the business school grads who went to real universities. Here is where your competition will go:

With an ERAU business degree you will be lucky if they let you go to Office Depot to buy toner for the copy machine.

When you put ERAU business on your resume here is what the HR dept will do :rotfl:

Here is how they will picture you

They have much cheaper ones at party city.

Looks like the type of guy that thinks he's hilarious calling ground and saying "Cessna 123NR ready for pushback, stand 12".
