Help! My parents won't let me go to my dream college!

After community college in NJ, I narrowed down the choices to 2 4-year colleges. Dowling College in Long Island and ERAU in Daytona Beach. The problem is that my parents won't let me go to ERAU because it's too far away and they think I'm not ready to live on my own yet. I love ERAU becuase everyone over there loves aviation. Plus, I'm planning to start a flight simulator club or some kind of aviation club over there and I think I will have a better chance of starting that club at a place where everyone loves aviation.

It's not that I want to go to ERAU only I just don't want my parents to rule out ERAU.

What should I do?

I hate to say it, buy your parents are right! Don't go to ERAU!

What should I do?

Should you go to college? Absolutely!! Get that four year degree, but don't do the Professional Pilot, Aeronautical Science, Flight Operations or whatever they call it these days degree. Go to an in-state college, save money and get a useful degree!

Are your parents paying for your college? If so, I guess you have to listen. If you're paying the bill (and since I assume since you have finished a 2 year degree you are over 18) then do whatever you want to do. However, you should listen to the advise of your parents and make an educated decision on your own.

:yeahthat:

Actually, I'm starting Community College this fall. I'm just planning ahead. I don't plan to major in flying at ERAU just business or aerospace studies.

Why would you go to ERAU for a Business degree? Have you looked at how much ERAU is?

look very closely at ERAU as it relates to expenses you could very easily be paying for your education the rest of your life if you decide to go to ERAU it bankrupted a couple of students i know personally, and i'd follow the advice of the other people already posting their giving you good advice

I have to agree with some others. If you're not paying for college on your own, then you don't really have the authority to state where you're going or want to go.

You can't ask for a toaster for your birthday and then tell the person giving it to you you wanted the red one.

Avoid ERAU!!! It is way WAY over priced and gives you zero marketability if you get an aviation degree.

Go to a cheaper state school, get a degree that has a use outside aviation (Marketing, finance, economics, IT, engineering...), fly at a local FBO and try and get a job working the ramp so you can network like crazy.

When you graduate you will have a quarter to half the debt of ERAU, a solid network of local pilots and employers and if the aviation industry is still a mess youll have a usable degree to support yourself with until you can find a job in aviation.

Well then, you still have 2 years to mature and show that you your folks you can live on your own. You also have 2 years to change your mind and gather much more information about other schools.

I'm amazed that people are still considering ERAU. Unless you have a full-ride scholarship, I wouldn't even think about it...

I'm not planning to fly at ERAU or even become a professional pilot! I plan to fly on the side at a local FBO.

were trying to tell you weather you fly at ERAU or not you will be paying the tuition for you aerospace studies or business

I'm a bit confused, why go to ERAU then? Why pay 3x the amount for tuition for a degree you can get for half the price at an in-state college?! Do you just want to be around Aviation dorks all the time?

As a Riddle grad myself, I would say there are MUCH better deals out there. The only way that I would recommend Riddle to anyone, is to do it online, and then fly at an airport near home. The VAST majority of students that attend Riddle for flying can't pursue the career because they are laden with debt. If you want to become an aeronautical engineer then I say Riddles a great school for that.

In a way, your parents are right. I know your 18 and you think you have the world by the short and curlies, but being on your own at that age is REALLY REALLY tough, and while I'm all for being independent, its better to ease yourself in to adulthood than to grab it by the horns. Make mistakes in life, but make them safely.

Take it from a guy that was living in Europe and enrolled himself in a military school at the age of 14 alone, then went to riddle alone, then moved to LA alone, then dallas alone. It can be a rough path and fools rush in.

Great! Find a in state 2-4 yr college and save a bundle. ERAU won't do anything for you exccept help empty your (parents) bank account...PERIOD!

Well, one of the reasons I want to go to ERAU is because its business major is focused on aviation. I don't know what I want to do in aviation but I might want to focus on the business side of aviation.
