Hellos on freq

I actually had a humorless FAA dude on the jumpseat who was writing down occurrences of controller non-standard phraseology and noting the freq and time.

Yes, such people exist.

Poor guy must not have any friends. Granted, when it is busy/congested, down to business, nothing else. During the night, or when it is slow it is nice to hear some off-beat chatter. Especially at 2am when there is nothing but dead silence it's always nice to get updated scores or who won the game from center/approach.

I can't stand the "any traffic in the area please advise" folks. Once is sufferable, but I got to hear this dude the other day in the pattern:

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X 10 west, 3000, inbound landing 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X 7 west, 2000, inbound landing 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X 5 west, 2000, inbound landing 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X entering left downwind 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X left downwind 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X left base 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X left base-to-final 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

"WM traffic, Mooney 1234X final 17, any traffic in the area please advise"

I mean, seriously. By the end of all that you've been monitoring CTAF for a good while and if anyone is talking you've heard them. Why not and quit asking supid questions?

I don't have an issue with chatting over the freq. as long as it is the standard one plane on freq times at Stockton. Unfortunately, when my ATM (Air Traffic Manager) or the SUP is monitoring me, a double click may be all you will get from me.

thats when i start telling them about my day so far, and how my current airplane is flying, what my plans are for later........

Hellos don't really bother me. But I can't stand when people start asking about ballgame scores. Is it really that important to know who is winning a game?

Yep, those guys are DB's. Whats worse is when they ask for "The Game". How many sports are played at any given time?

As long as the pilot isn't stepping on/blocking out another transmission, the hello/good morning/how ya doing stuff doesn't bother me.

Sitting on a ramp with a hand-held radio giving your solo student instructions on how to properly use flaps during landing, however, does.

If you are sitting on the ramp with a hand-held instructing your student how to "properly use flaps during landing", then either your student had NO business soloing, or you have done a piss poor job of instruction.

Oh, come on. Every time I have heard someone ask, it was pretty obvious which game they were asking for. For example the NFC and AFC championship games or super bowl. Hell, we even got ACARS messages during the super bowl with score updates.

Flying in Texas, that question invariably means the Cowboys scores.

Or possibly if the Rangers are in the playoffs.

I was taught - perhaps incorrectly - that it's okay to ask for an airport advisory on CTAF if the AWOS/ASOS was offline for any reason.

And if it's a real slow day, I know of at least one FBO guy who will give you landing critiques on frequency, but only if he knows you. :)

I do wish another pilot on frequency that day would have relayed something along these lines to him that day.

Instead, I was asked to "cut the guy some slack," when I told him that my local control frequency was not for flight instruction purposes (after I had already asked him to stop - twice).

True story.

That is ridiculous. Too bad the FAA just didn't happen to be out there.

You're not alone! It peeves me as well! And luckily there is a part in the AIM which discusses that this is NOT to be used. AIM 4-1-9 G. (Pilots stating, "Traffic in the area, please advise" is not a recognized Self-Announce Position and/or Intention phrase and should not be used under any condition.)

Obviously you are not a steeler fan. YES it is.

anyways, I'm guilty of saying hello to a friend or two on frequency. So I certainly don't mind one bit. Do it when its not busy, not a problem.

As a pilot it annoys the hell out of me in certain situations.

Annoying: When a pilot at my company says just my last name on the freq as if to acknowledge that they have discovered me being in the same general area as them in a wheres waldo sort of way. I get it, I work with you, I saw you ten minutes ago in the crew room, now shut up.

Not annoying: When a guy I used to instruct with who I havent seen in a few years and is now at XYZ carrier which I never knew says a quick hey during quiet times on the radio. Its good to know they are still alive and doing well (if you can call working at a regional doing well.)

I do not do facebook so I am not connected with a quarter of the earths population so as for past friends and pilots I do not know where they are or what they are up to.
:yeahthat: Exactly that.:)

I do it occasionally. If there is someone who I went to college with who I hear I will chime in with a short and sweet comment, but I won't carry it into a conversation. I won't do it at all on NYC approach or similarly congested radio.
