Hellos on freq

As a pilot it annoys the hell out of me in certain situations.

Annoying: When a pilot at my company says just my last name on the freq as if to acknowledge that they have discovered me being in the same general area as them in a wheres waldo sort of way. I get it, I work with you, I saw you ten minutes ago in the crew room, now shut up.

Not annoying: When a guy I used to instruct with who I havent seen in a few years and is now at XYZ carrier which I never knew says a quick hey during quiet times on the radio. Its good to know they are still alive and doing well (if you can call working at a regional doing well.)

I do not do facebook so I am not connected with a quarter of the earths population so as for past friends and pilots I do not know where they are or what they are up to.

If it didn't interfere with something else, it didn't bother me a bit. I hope it didn't bother anyone when I said, "Hi" to someone I knew... I did it more than once.

I think at some airports like SYR, it is fine. On the way back from my checkride, one of the other club members flying a 182 said congrats Tim. For some reason, it compounded into every pilot on freq saying congrats including the TRACON controller! It was pretty funny.

It's the conversations on UNICOM that drive me knuts!

:yeahthat::yeahthat::yeahthat:

Honestly, as a pilot, I think its kinda cool to see that people who haven't talked in forever happening to be in the same airspace, on the same freq, at the same time.

I say have a nice day when it isnt busy.

Now what gets me, I was handed off to approach, i contact them, they give me a updated clearance, before i can read it back, two guys start talking... RFD APP wasn't too happy.

Now on the other hand, i have a lengthy conversation between CHI APP and Skydive 1 about how great Chicagoland Skydiving Center is on my solo XC :D

wasnt busy that day though

I have also been called a by over the freq... made me laugh for a few minutes!

Depends where I am at. At MRI, I knew all the controllers real well, and knew when not to talk. I'll chat on CTAF, but only if it's dead in the pattern or wherever. A lot of places around here have CTAFs that cover wide stretches of land (122.9 covers all of lynn canal). I dunno, doesn't bother me. If I have a pressing conversation on hand, I'll say "hey man, go numbers/pilot/fingers" or whatever it's known locally as and go there.

When I think about it, I have had a lot of cool conversations with controllers. I was talking to center one day when the controller asked if I was from Ocean City, Md (where I was enroute to). I said I was, it turned into about five different pilots and the controller discussing where the best crab cakes in town are. My favotire conversation with a controller happened when I was coming home late at night and the center controller told me he used to fly out of my home airport. It turns out he knew my parents, was my bosses flight instructor, and remembered me from when I was a baby. I do say hi to people I know when it is slow, but only if it is really quiet. It is always cool to hear your parents on the radio when you are a thousand miles away from home.

Alex.

Does it irk you when a pilot says hello to another pilot on your frequency? What about when a pilot says hello to you?

As long as the pilot isn't stepping on/blocking out another transmission, the hello/good morning/how ya doing stuff doesn't bother me.

Sitting on a ramp with a hand-held radio giving your solo student instructions on how to properly use flaps during landing, however, does.

I actually had a humorless FAA dude on the jumpseat who was writing down occurrences of controller non-standard phraseology and noting the freq and time.

Yes, such people exist.
