Not really. I have one just like that for personal health (ear) reasons.Well, if you need one ear open an ANR headset is pretty pointless.

I'm not sure what you're saying. You use a single ANR earpiece for medical reasons outside the cockpit? What I was trying to say (rather poorly) is I haven't seen a single sided ANR headset for aviation. As I would think that would be pointless. Meaning if you're going to use the ANR, you might as well use both sides for the protection. Since even without an intercom you could probably hear the other pilot more clearly with an ANR headset on as opposed to bare ear. I guess if you've got an issue with one ear and it happened to be the side you need to hear with then I could see a need for one.Not really. Inside the cockpit. I own a Telex 850 ANR single sided only:

In my medical (ear) case, lets just say it's only worth protecting one ear. From birth the other ear, well...
In the flight deck, it's not an issue. Through 18k pilots use the headsets and then usually it comes off at our company. I keep mine on and then take the switch out of the intercom position and just talk normally to the other guy even with this headset on. As for flight deck noise, I flew for a year with taking off the ship headset above 18k and now have flown another year with the Telex 850 ANR. I must say, there was definitely a noticeable difference in the noise cut down. I'd like to think that long term, even a quiet flight deck like the A320 would lead to hearing problems/losses at certain decibel levels without protection.
There is a reason McDonnell Douglas is no more.
I still use my Zulus in the 737. I didn't think I would but after spending 7 or more hours in it at a time, I was convinced I'd be deaf in a few years if I didn't.
The one ear open trick works well until we hit cruise and if no one is talking then I put them fully on.
So you just take one ear cup off during takeoffs, climbs, etc?
I worry about my hearing protection as well.
Exactly. I just push one off my ear enough where I can hear the captain and run check lists. I've been using it for over a year now without an issue. Since Im in the right seat and my mike doesn't turn that way, I just use the hand mike the whole flight.
