Headset, One Ear Open

Seggy, don't feel bad because you have to sit in a cockpit that has an overhead panel out of the '60s and a decibel level that will make you deaf by age 50. We won't look down on you for it. ;)

Not sure what airplane he'll be flying, but the 717 doesn't have an intercom, and we certainly don't worry about hearing loss. The cockpit is so quiet that you could practically hear a pin drop. After we get above FL180, most of us take the headsets off completely and just use the speaker and hand mic.

Apparently you aren't see a whole lot of 310 knots at 5000 ummm... I mean 10,000 feet.

Just 310? You're a slacker. :) On the rare occasion that I actually fly, it's usually a stand-up. And then it's barber-pole the whole way. Still not even half as loud as a 737 at normal cruise speed.

A lot of guys fly 330 or so in the thing. To about 1500 feet. I'd like to preserve my hearing so I tend not to.

It IS very quiet above 18,000, even at higher airspeeds.

We have an intercom in the 330, but we generally only use it from post push/pull to 18,000 when we go "topless"

We have no intercoms and it's relatively quite, unless we get dispatched in the 20 series. I use a pair of Halos; they work exceptionally well. I have a pair of Telex for backup.

Are you talking about the falcon 20?

All right two pages strong :).

Would any of you guys recommend buying the UFLYMIKE with the QC15? My QC15 are pretty light and do not dampen the noise as bad as the A20's. I could hear pretty well with both ears on, while being next to loud noises. Not a great stress test, but if I need to pop one ear off I just look dumb, but I found it is not that uncomfortable.

The Lear 20 series. But, even in the 20 you are able to talk, it's just not as quiet as the 30 series.

Does your SOP allow it? If so, go for it.

I have not heard anything regarding TSO cert, but I saw on uflymike's website that it could be sent in to be TSO'd. Really like the QC15 with the uflymike. Only issues I see is the mike is on left side.

It's not regarding the TSO, it's regarding how your SOP is written. IE: ours states: we have to use single ear headsets, whether it's an in ear or over ear, that does not matter. We are not allowed to use a Bose or any two ear set headset and move it off our ear. Odd, but that is how it's written.

Thanks for the advice/information regarding the SOP. I will just wait until I see the SOP until I buy anything.
