Good News, Bad News

LOL . . . if 31 is old, I need to start shopping for caskets!

I'd have been dead for five years!

ROFIBC is post rigor mortis!

But I don't mean to unleash a blast of fire retardant on the thread, but if you're figuring a 30 year career progression at a regional carrier, you might want to take a good hard look at exactly what a regional carrier does.

There were a lot of guys that were planning on flying for Comair until they were 60 and retiring, but considering they've gotten underbid time and time again and their future is in question.

That can happen at any regional. Hell, that can happen at almost any major too.

What are your times? Any interest in being based in SLC?

1800TT, 750 Multi, 680 Multi turbine PIC

SLC is my dream base. I used to live there and very much want to get back. Thats one of the main reasons I wanted to work for ameriflight.

Thing is, I expressed this from day 1. I was told they dont hire straight into the turbines, and that I must go to OAK for 3 months before I can transfer to SLC. Then, in the interview, I was told 6 months before I can transfer.

Not sure how it all works.......

But again, I really dont have a leg to stand on since they made it very clear on the phone (before I came out to interview) that the interview was for a piston posistion to be based in Oakland. I dont really see how I can tell them, just a few days later, that I dont think I can afford it....since I knew that was the plan all along.

This may sound really out there, but if you can I'd put in for BIL. It's really not that bad, plus I've heard you can get into the BE99's in like three months or less there because that's basically all they have and nobody wants to live there because it's not a huge city. Plus, cost of living is a lot less, and it's a large enough metro area that you can get just about anything you want. It's really not that bad.
BIL is all turbine.

Propilot, you got your ME turbine time flying twin otters for your parents skydive operation right? (thats what is sticking in my memory anyway and i dont want to look it up)

Anyway, just wanted to say that I'm jealous, and I'm sure you'll get the turbine upgrade soon enough, no need to rush. In the meantime try to enjoy "living the life". I lived cheap in a pop-up camper in an old people campground for 2 months when i was finishing up some ratings, and it was great (great story, great memories). It's all what you make it to be.

My father is a machinist and my mother is a professor at kent state university. Got me confused with someone else.

Yea, I know that I am going to have to leave cheap. I just dont want to end up on the streets.

BULL!! Tell that to the 9 or 10 pilots that were hired into the 99 in SLC just in the past year(me included). Sometimes I really don't know what goes on in BUR. Really. And you've got a lot more time than I did when I was hired.
Regarding the charts, I wouldn't get Jeps again unless they were buying. Don't get me started on the whole chart thing with AMF. Buy some gov. charts.

It's too bad we were not able to help you out before you started this process. We could have told you who to talk to to get what you want, not what they want. It can be worked in your favor, but it might be to late now. Good luck, it is a great company and some awesome flying. Hopefully you can get out to SLC soon.:)

Wow, didn't take one page for the regional vs freight crap to hit....

Good call, the majors are looking for quality SIC regional jet time these days! That's thinking ahead for ya!

Hey, let's simmer here, John. No one even threw a punch at AMF, and you start in on us regional guys. BTW, last time I checked, there was no "tubine PIC" column on the DAL or CAL apps. Which one of us is gonna have the turbine mins for those jobs first, me or you? Granted, neither of us would be competitive at mins, but your arguement isn't valid as much now as it was three years ago. Besides, I don't think the FOs at Horizon are complaining too much.....

Hehehehe . . . how is it going to be any better at a regional?

Lloyd, even at PCL, it was a bit better. They put us in a hotel, gave us per diem, gave us charts and the uniform is payroll deducted over several months. Heck, the second uniform payment of the month, you MAKE $5 since they give us $20 a month uniform allowance. Once you get your base, the company pays for the hotel until your "moving days." Even after that, you could live with mom and dad and commute to a $150/mo crash pad. Still comes out cheap than living in OAK to me. Besides, I thought once you were at a freight carrier, you were in the dough? :)

You can't count on anything here, ever.
6 month turbine upgrade at AMF, say 6-12 months after that and you're in the Metro making $40,00-$50,000 a year.

So which is it? Not counting on things or counting on the turbine upgarde in 6-12 months? :)

They were up front with me through the entire process about getting the PA31 and being based in OAK......I really dont want to make anyone over there angry by complaining about it now.

Well, I'll complain on here just not to ameriflight haha ;]

Thanks for everyone's comments, I appreciate it. Im sure I will get to SLC soon enough, untill then perhaps I can just TDY and have no rent....we will see.

C'mon guys, no need to hijack this into a regional vs. freight debacle. Everyone has their reasons for what they chose.

Me personally, Im willing to walk away from any aviation job at any time if it means going into debt. I had no clue how pricey Cali really was until I got there and halfway through training I realized that this was not going to work out for me and that I would need to be based outside of Cali (either pdx or go tdy) or I was not going to be working at AMF. If you show up with a good attitude and have a solid training record, they will work with you. Even though AMF is a good company that has decent pay (for aviation) they still need to hire a certain skill level that can fly PIC IFR. They cant hire a warm body with 280 hours like Mesa or Pinnacle. So if you show them that you are good stuff, then they need you and you are in the drivers seat. From my experience they will 100% work with you.

Hey, I can speak for no company but my own, and only my own experience. However, I got a training bonus, they gave me a hotel room, my charts are delivered to my inbox, and I don't even know what a uniform is!!!:p

Welcome to AMF!
WTF were you thinking in picking OAK?
Im going to be BUR based in the chieftan. You can crash at my hotel in OAK when Im TDY there. They do hire straight into the 99 there was a guy in BIGS who was 99 SLC. I also wan't to get into SLC and spend at least two years there. Your going to love the Ramada! ha ha ha ha
