Gold Seal And Renewing Your Certificates.

Old School KSUX
Every couple of months there are gold seal questions and here is a "gotcha".

Just because you put your paper work in, it does not necessarily mean that your instructor certificates have been renewed, only reissued.

It is possible to renew your instructor certificates for another two years when you get your gold seal other wise it is just a re-issuance.

The expiration of your instructor certificate is clearly located on the back. The date of issuance is in bold type on the front.

My good buddy has been going crazy trying to figure out if the gold seal resets the clock. The answer is that "it depends".

The same FSDO but two different inspectors. Good Buddy's inspector said no way. Mine brought it up with out me asking.

Now that some time has passed, Good Buddy thought he was good for another year, when in fact he would have sailed right by his real expiration and needed to take all the rides again. I too would have sailed by my old expiration if I had his inspector.

Make sure the 8710 has the boxes you want checked and make sure the back of that certificate matches what you have in your head, otherwise you will sail right past your expiration and find yourself on a few rides.

Using caution any time one signs something is sound advice. Anyone qualifying for a gold seal instructor certificate would more than meet the current requirement to renew their instructor certificate based upon activity 14 CFR 61.197(a)(2)(i), so requesting a reissue would not be appropriate.

However, one correction. If a flight instructor certificate expires, the instructor need only take one practical test to reinstate their certificate with all ratings. For example, if an instructor holds ASEL, AMEL, Instrument-Airplane, Helicopter, Instrument-Helicopter, and Glider, they need only take the Flight Instructor Glider test to have all of their privileges reinstated. Also, a reinstatement does not require a repeating of all tasks that were done during the initial issuance. A table within the PTS describes the tasks necessary during a reinstatement.

Cool to know!

Springfield eh? Isn't there one in every state?

Don't tell us, let us guess.

I'm going to guess MO.

Interesting. The FSDO at BDL said it was automatically reissued with a new expiration date.

I guess it all depends on the FAA fiefdom in which you inhabit.

Did you really expect standardization across the federal government? :D

Born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts.

When you fill out the application on IACRA which should you choose to renew the cfi cert?

3) Select the certificate Basis
CFR 61 - COMPLETION OF REQUIRED TEST
CFR 141 - GRADUATE OF APPROVED COURSE
ACTIVITIES
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
FIRC - FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR REFRESHER COURSE

assuming you use the 5 or greater sign-off and 80% pass rate.

also when applying the for gold seal for the first time.

i am personally torn between the "activities" and "duties and responsibilities"

I renewed my CFI this past November (to keep a December expiration date). I also had the gold seal added at the same time.

Application for Ground Instructor (AGI)

I have a question about issuing of AGI certificate.

I have submitted my complete application personally to FSDO two months ago and I was given a temp cert on the spot. Till now, I have not received any news from FAA yet. :dunno:

Now, I wonder how long does it take for the piece of green plastic card to be mailed to applicant?

Under the old system, this expanse of time wouldn't be unusual. With this new system though something may have gotten lost.

I'm too familiar with the old system and say hang tight for another month, then call.

This make me even more worry. :(

I will have to wait for another month.

Last time I used a paper 8710 was for my Instrument rating and I had to get a 2nd temporary from th FSDO while they figured out the problem. Took almost 6 months.

I used IACRA for CSEL & CMEL and got both permanent certificates in about 10 days after each checkride.

I also used IACRA for my CFI and even though the FAA Airmen Certification website shows that it was processed & issued, I'm still waiting to receive the plastic card after 6 weeks.

You should get yours soon Mike. Mine arrived a week or so ago.

IACRA is something new! I have never heard of. :dunno:

I have given up waiting for my green plastic card after waiting for so long!

I just registered myself with IACRA a moment ago and applied the certificate right away. :D

It really wasted my time, money and effort going to FSDO office, just to submit my application.

Mike H, thank you so much for recommending IACRA, I did not know such online application exist.

Just submitting the IACRA application doesn't get it sent in. Your reccommending CFI has to review & electronically sign it and so does the DPE (or ASI from the FSDO). The only difference is that it's electronic rather than paper.
