Going to Sheffield to be a dispatcher...no experience at all

Leave your valuable behind.

I got robbed there once while going to that Dispatch school.

Re: Going to Sheffield to be a dispatcher...no experience at

Yes, no offense to iFOD or any other school.

My comment was a generalization on the sound, non-crazy merits of choosing a school based on reputation rather than proximity.

None taken. Reputation is important in this business but you earn it from hard work and how much you know your stuff. You want to spend the least amount money possible in training because your going to be spending much more in moving expenses once you've landed the job. Since we get paid so little to start you don't want to put yourself or your family in a financial slump. IFOD, Sheffield are great schools but the closest one to you is the one you should consider. Again just my 0.02 cents.

Good Luck to you

I think you're all nuts! :D

Glad this part of the forum hasn't blown up yet.....lord knows I have enough to do policing everywhere else! :)

It is all good here. Nice to know you on duty though ;).

Well, that is good to know, although you can get robbed anywhere. Im not going to be taking very much with me except clothes, personal items, a phone and a laptop, and I will have the phone and laptop with me all of the time anyways.

Re: Going to Sheffield to be a dispatcher...no experience at

I wouldn't call you or anybody idiots. Yes I think your crazy (nuts) for moving all the way to FL versus sticking to Dallas, but you did ask . Don't take anything personally around here, we're all here to help. I'm glad to hear that your getting into the profession though. Dispatch is a fun job to be in. If I could find something in PHX besides Mesa, I would stick to the job but I've got other plans for a career in this industry besides dispatch that I'm working on.

Good luck on your endeavors, and feel free to PM me if you've got any questions. I'm here to help

Something wrong with Mesa?

Re: Going to Sheffield to be a dispatcher...no experience at

Something wrong with Mesa?

No, I did interview with them last month. But they had alot of applicants from what I heard. They passed me up because I couldn't make their March 5th class start date. Their SOC had a great view from the 7th floor of the city, nice building too. But I'm sure that some folks here have horror stories from Mesa. I heard they have high turn over as well.

Re: Going to Sheffield to be a dispatcher...no experience at

Well, I will be open to just about any location. I am going to be as flexible as I can.

They did have the openings for dispatch once again last week. But I just checked a minute ago and its no longer there so I'm sure that they called up some of the other applicants, probably for an April start class date but they weren't sure if they needed an April class.

Where did you end up getting your new job at? I wouldnt mind Phoenix. I have friends there and it is a large city and the weather is more to my liking. I am an outdoorsy kinda person anyways, so I am going to look that direction when I am done with school as well.

There isn't any dispatch jobs in PHX other than Mesa. So It looks like I'm going to have the profession for awhile, maybe even for good unless I can into Mesa. I'm sure its not going to happen at this point but we'll see later.

Well, it seems like they are always hiring. My contact at sheffield just had two of their graduates from the january class get gigs with them. Anyways, hang in there.

And dont they code share with United and Delta? That would be pretty sweet..

Re: Going to Sheffield to be a dispatcher...no experience at

HMMMM From what I heard MESA were looking for dispatchers like crazy..............But due to reduced flying. They removed some open slots.

Are you currently employed by them? Yeah I'm sure thats why one day I saw the openings and gone another day. Makes sense. I check on the website about once a week. Any news on any future classes? In my interview I heard they were possibly starting an April class.

Yes but as a mechanic not a dispatcher, I work at KIAD.

To be honest I never went to PHX in my entire life :buck:.

I did my training in KCLT

(Note I still have my dispatch license)

AHHH, well to be completely honest. I should have went for an A&P instead of dispatch. There is a serious shortage for A&Ps and virtually everyone's looking for MX's. I'm sure you've got a good deal going for you in the MX department.

Re: Going to Sheffield to be a dispatcher...no experience at

Ok, I am going to do this. I have always been interested in aviation, and things of that nature. I have heard and done my research. I have heard that sheffield is one of the best and will really prepare me well for the career. Am I crazy??

I went to Sheffield with no experience in the mid 90's, and I'm now working for a major, so I don't think you are crazy. I did have an aviation degree and some avionics repair experience from the military, but that didn't help me with getting a dispatch job. I think my training at Sheffield was very good. I drove there from New Mexico...at the time part of my motivation was that Sheffield was VA approved, and none of the schools in Texas were at that time. (I think since then some of them have gotten that approval.)

Sheffield does have a good reputation, but the main thing (as others have said) is to get the license and start getting some experience at a regional. Dispatching experience is looked at much more closely than where you got your license from. Then when you see openings at majors (and they do happen, albeit not frequently) apply away! I probably could have gotten to one sooner had I applied earlier, but 9/11 also put a damper on things...

Also, in this career, it's likely you'll have to move at least a couple of times before you can settle down, so if you're looking to not have to move, you may want to look at some other aviation job such as maintenance, etc......but good luck with your schooling and best of luck with your career.

I worked for Mesa for a while; they did have a high turnover. It was good experience but I think there are other regionals out there that have better organized SOC offices (SkyWest, Comair, Air Wisconsin, etc.) I didn't hate it with all my guts or anything but I don't miss working there either.

Yeah but the view was nice though, you gotta admit that. I went there once and I liked the view. :D

Yes, the view was nice, but the room should have been facing the airport, not away from it. This was brought up with the CEO of Mesa when they were remodeling the office prior to the move to PHX and he blew off the SOC manager. Just another example of the "Mesa way." There was a rumor that the CEO wanted dispatch on that side of the building so he could see the office from his house on Camelback mountain...it wouldn't surprise me.

Most of the SOC managers they've had in recent years have no dispatch experience, because they can't get anyone experienced to work there and put up with all the BS...so you have a parade of pilot training managers, and currently I believe an ex maintenance controller in charge of the office...

But yes, it was a nice view.
