GET OFF THE RUNWAY !!!

[ QUOTE ]
His point wasn't that its good to rush, it was that its NOT good to call tower and then lollygag along.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks ESF. I don't like to be rushed, so I try not to do the same to my students. It's not safe to rush.

We held short behind a couple other aircraft for about 3-4 minutes. Perfect time to run a checklist, etc... We had plenty of time to get ready. My student was taught to get ready and run final items when #1 and then while taxiing out onto the runway. I don't think it's safe to taxi out onto the runway while running a checklist, especially at an uncontrolled field.

I remember one of my first cross countries...

Wilmington Approach: "N714RA, turn right heading 090, vectors for sequencing."

Me: "Negative, 714RA won't need any sequencing today, we're just landing at Wilmington..."

Then I found out what sequencing was...

Trust me. Very, VERY few of us are flying with the right F/As. I've seen more slam clicks at Delta than you would believe.

"Hey, we're going to 'Rendezvous' for BBQ for an early dinner and over to the ball park to watch some baseball, you guys want to come along?"

"No, I'm going to the maaaaawl, then I'm going to get a chicken caesar salad with the dressin' on the side and watch Dr. Phil..."

Confession time...

(I've shared this a couple of times, so I'll keep it short)

On my solo x/c, I COMPLETELY forgot how to squawk. My instructor and I had only done it once or twice prior. I was not allowed into DAB's airspace until I figured it out.

I was HIGHLY embarassed! But, I never forgot how to squawk again.

And this one time, when I was a student pilot soloing...

Maybe it could be a Fox show. "True confessions of student pilots."

Thread creep, I know. Doug, how about the ones who are talking on the cell phone from the time they start up the jetway, out to the van, on the whole 35 min ride to the hotel, and then all during check in. Then they turn anti-social and won't say boo to anyone they are flying with. "I'm tired, I'm going to order room service and do my hair." "Well, gee it is 3 in the afternoon, I can see why you are worn out. See you at 7 tomorrow morning." Slam. Click.

My favorite is when we're done offloading passengers and getting ready to hand the jet over to the next crew. You see the next crew standing in the jetway and you say, 'ok, the plane's all yours!' and one of them says "oh, I came in on this jet!"

Poor kid. Is this the fault of the instructor or the pilot? I'm assuming he'd only just soloed.

[/ QUOTE ]
Whoah are you really that serious?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes - when it comes to aviation. Flying is a serious business.

Anyway, my original intent of this post wasn't to bash the student pilot. It's obvious he messed up and that he knew it.

I think the tower controller yelling "Get off the runway!!!" couldn't have helped the pilot's nerves much. It sounded to me like the controller was more annoyed that the pilot didn't request full-stop-taxi-backs when he first made contact with the tower, so he wasn't ready for it. I think the controller was already flustered from all the traffic at the airport, and took it out on the student.

I'm just wondering why ATC would sequence a corporate jet so close behind a light plane. Not too smart if you ask me, since it leaves little wiggle room.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, I've a few times been in the position where the tower agreed to clear me to take-off (after I've annouced ready to depart), if I expedited for landing traffic. It's greatly annoying to all concerned if you accept that clearance and then dawdle on the runway.

As a side note, always check final before accepting an expedited departure clearance. I was offered that one time only to look and see a twin which appeared to be WAY too close to the threshold for me to squeeze out in front. I politely declined.

You've never flown into KORL.

"Cessna 4SP, slow to final approach speed traffic is a 152, 1 mile final"

then ten seconds later

"Cessna 4SP, keep your speed up. GV on the ILS behind you, cleared to land."
"Cessna 4SP, minimum time on the runway, GV is mile final"
"Take that taxiway, sir. That one right there!"

Just another day in ORL, where separation minimums go right out the door.....

Im all for helping the jets out in the traffic pattern and at airports, believe me! But I wouldnt be telling students to GO GO GO. Dont rush checklist items just to make someone in a jet happy. I would hate to teach a student to rush out and then forget something like a boost pump or something. If your student is taking this long to take the runway, he/she may be unsure of procedures and may need more ground.

[/ QUOTE ]

In my incident, they were a full stop, sitting at the intersection of the taxiway they were going to turn off on... They were sitting stopped on the runway for over 30 seconds, at a dead stop... There is nothing wrong with telling your student to "Get off the runway"... It wasn't like they were a touch and go... Since the CFI didn't tell his student to move, I did it for him... In a "non-verbal" kinda way...

Come and fly at some GA airports once in a while... This airport is one of the busiest GA airports in the country... They have to squeeze them in sometimes... The spacing wasn't "close" by any account... except for when someone decides to sit on the runway for 30 seconds with no movement...

45 miles out of KDAB they wanted us to slow to approach speed...

That's because there were probably 4-5 172's from one of the big name schools here (can you guess which one?) shooting the ILS. I've been in a 150 and been asked to slow down because someone ahead of me is on a 5 mile final at 60 knots.

Flown into GA airports tons of times, that's what I used to do in 135 for 4 years prior to military. Still fly to them, I'm very sure nothing's changed, and their ops aren't cosmic. I'm also well aware of ATCs responsibiities, GA or mil; and I've seen many times when spacing is even too close for "packing them in". Not saying that's what was in your case, but I've seen often it in my time at different airports.

When I was flying Caravans out of PHX, the last thing they wanted was some slow-a$$ C-208 at 95kts on final with jet traffic following. If VFR, we'd get vectored to points north/south of the field for downwind to a short downwind-final landing, in reality being no factor. IFR, well, they had to make it work then.

I flew c-208's part 135 (cargo) for over 2 years and my app sp was more like 175...
they usually slowed ME down for some jet doing 100, 5 MILES OUT!!!!

Wait what? Maybe you got the two speeds mixed up? I've never heard of a C-208 doing 195...

175.....in a Caravan? Were you descending at 80 degrees nose low at full power?
