Gee thanks Raven Careers

4 (four separate) Part 121 failures? You shouldn’t touch another 121 cockpit ever again.

Captains deserve better than a crap FO who fails that many times at a 121 airline. And most importantly, the flying public deserves better.

You know that’s an excellent point. People come onto the forums asking how they can get hired when they’ve failed 2…3…4…+ checkrides And the pilot community goes out of our way to offer suggestions. Maybe we should accept that not everyone should do this job, and help that person find another vocation where they can earn a living with their love of aviation, but not necessarily fly paying passengers. Not everybody can do this job and that’s okay!

Agreed!

The last two big airline accidents in this country - Atlas 767 and Colgan Q400 - would not have happened if someone, somewhere, had told those two PFs at the time that they can no longer fly 121 airliners and metaphorically taken the keys away from their hands.

I’ve got to believe there is a little bit of creativity being used by Raven in regards to what a “failure“ is. Raven helps you with the interview, but you’ve got to get selected for that first.

No legacy is going to continue you past the initial application with 4 true 121 failures.

I’ve never seen a group of professionals that tries so hard to lower the barriers to entry. We should be proud of the time, effort, and dedication to excellence that it takes to become a pilot. Not try to make it so any doofus off the street can become an airline pilot.

Not denying that we currently have a race to the bottom with the current staffing shortages but it amazing how far you’ll dig to find something to be up in arms about. I imagine you invite neighbors over to your house just so you can be pissed that their on your lawn.

What pilots are trying to do this? It seems like the opposite is usually true. For instance most pilots who have ATPs support the ATP rule, pilot unions lobby to keep it in place, etc.

We have a pilot at our company who is a social media influencer. They frequently rail against the 1500 hour rule on their channel, and advocate for its repeal.

I'd like to work with coworkers who didn't creep on me and make announcements about my career progression without asking me about it first, but here we are...

Oh you’re not letting go? Perhaps you should watch that movie.

I’d like to work at an airline where if I ever forgot to turn an APU on during boarding, that my fellow FO deadheading in the back would just approach the flight deck and ask - instead of going on the pilot forum and calling out both CA and FO by name for a hot plane and saying gee thanks!

You know that happens at my airline as well.

However there are a lot of people that step on the jet, turn left and don't bother checking the cabin temp at all as long as it's comfortable in the cockpit.

If a DH'er is pissed about the air, imagine how your high value customers feel about it.

I absolutely agree. Most pilot influencers are not normal adults.

It takes a special kind of person who can talk into a camera by themselves and pretend the camera is a person. I couldn’t do it. Then there’s the editing involved, cleaning up the video, uploading, etc.

More power to these folks. But agreed, you can’t exactly be a normal guy doing this.

That said, I’ve seen a couple BigErn videos (no clue if he is the one being referenced), and he seems like a professional, friendly great individual.

I’m referring to how it’s handled.

Say you did that. And I’m DH in the back and feel hot. I don’t come up to you to ask for air. Instead, I go on the internal pilot Widget forum, make a thread titled for this flight number, and basically write thank you to Capt Derg and FO John Doe for keeping a hot airplane and making me sweat.

Honestly? Chances that I'd see that are fairly slim because the only forum I read are this one or my corporate internet (for shock value of what people will say on their employer's social media platform).

BUT! I'm weird. I'd probably think "Well, ok. Maybe I should bring that into my scan more diligently".

Sure I can see some people getting mad. ANGRY if it was on the public internet… But, "Ooh, an angry airline pilot, no one cares" and you'll just go to bed mad.

No, not him. Heard nothing but good things about that guy. He's even on the company distance learning this quarter.

I wouldn't do it, but more power to him.

In a general sense, yes.

HOWEVER, there are regionals that hand out failures like rainbow fentanyl to toothless hillbillies.

Things that, at best, would be a debrief item where you sit there thinking "How the hell is this a checkride bust? This smells like the equivalent of a jealous boyfriend throwing acid on his girlfriend to make her unattractive to other men".

Serious question since I’m, uh, trying to get in the mood - how do you coherently explain that in an interview setting? It’s been best practice for decades that you don’t blame the examiner, don’t whine that you were set up or that it was unfair, you own it and explain what you learned. Even if what you learned is that the game is sometimes rigged, you don’t say that in an interview. And 4 is certainly a mind-boggling number of 121 failures to still move upwards.

They didn't say "which" major or what period of time it had been since the last failure.

I'd suggest being honest in the narrative, don't place blame, fell down, dusted yourself off, went back and nailed it and here's what I learned. Usually the person reading the application can smell BS if it was a raw deal from the examiner or the candidate is putting lipstick on a pig.
