Police investigating phone threat made to Deer Valley airport

11:26 AM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, June 23, 2009
Mike Watkiss / 3TV
PHOENIX - Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday a man made a phone call to Magellan Health Care and made a bunch of threats.

The man identified himself as an unemployed disgruntled pilot.

During the call one of the threats made reference to Deer Valley Airport and a name linked to a hanger and plane housed at the airport.

Phoenix Police were brought in and put the airport on a partial lockdown. Air traffic was not restricted, but police were controlling access in and out of the parking lot.

The man making the threats said if he was confronted by police he would shoot it out.

Police have not been able to track down the man associated with the hanger. They do know he has been known to hang out at the Phoenix Country Club.

It is a possibility that the caller and the man linked to the airport hanger could be one in the same.

If anyone has any information you are asked to call Phoenix Police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

Threat sends police to Deer Valley Airport
Phoenix police rushed to Deer Valley Airport Tuesday after a man threatened a shootout with police, and mentioned the satellite airport in north Phoenix.

Hours later, police said the unidentified suspect was on a crisis hotline, threatening to take his own life, and that he appeared to be a danger only to himself.

Detective James Holmes said a man called Magellan Health Services, the behavioral health provider for Maricopa County, about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"They received a call from a male who stated he was unemployed, he lived in his car, he was an ex-pilot and, for whatever reason, he was very, very upset," said Holmes.

He said the man made a threat toward police officers and mentioned Deer Valley Airport.

Police restricted people entering Deer Valley for a time.

Holmes said only the front entrance -- the public access -- to the airport was closed.

"The runways were still working, people were flying in and out, a lot of training was going on. It was still in operation."

Police were taking a close look at a plane that had a connection to the caller's name, Holmes said.

If his claims are accurate about his profession and current status; unfortunately, some guys in that situation really feel they have nothing to lose.

It's sad in an almost endearing sort of way.

Who are we that love aviation so much that when you take it away we feel we have nothing else to live for?

They clipped my Dad's wings in '88. Medical'ed out. Cancer took his life in '97, but part of him died back in '88.

The sad part is he is going to lose his license after this, so no more flying now, for good.

One wonders.. where his family or friends are that might have prevented this.

Based on the geography I can only speculate as to his estranged employer.

US Air?

Yeah didn't seem to be thinking that through very well...

Well without using any other references other than the two snippets Doug posted, it only says unemployed pilot. Could be any number of jobs he got laid off from.

I missed this though on the first read through

"They received a call from a male who stated he was unemployed, he lived in his car, he was an ex-pilot and, for whatever reason, he was very, very upset," said Holmes.

Not saying he should be committing acts like this but it's kind of odd to be like "We don't know why he is upset." As if the man's life is just peach being unemployed and living in a car.

Why else point out that he's a pilot, unless there's a relevant connection?

Unless, of course, it's just pure sensationalism?

How is it sensationalism to point out his profession, which he confessed to when he contacted the police?

Im not saying you are wrong, just that there are a ton of possibilities.

Oh, well, how do we think astronauts felt with one of their own donned adult diapers and stocked up on beef jerky before that fateful cross country drive? :)

hahaha good point!

That must have been really weird as I would assume their community being so small that they all know each other pretty well.

i expect this to happen accross more and more professions and with people from all backgrounds.

we're ALL screwed.
